Finally, here’s some good stuff for Lucifans out there! Lucifer is back with two bonus episodes “Boo Normal” and “Once Upon A Time.” Showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich have really put out their best with these two. And even though the verdict’s still up for a fourth season, I think these two bonus eps will get those networks thinking.
In the limbo where there’s no Charlotte and Chloe hasn’t seen Lucifer’s devil face yet comes to the episode “Boo Normal.” A friend from the past comes back to check up on Ella (Aimee Garcia). However, only Ella could see her. Ghost friend or imaginary friend? No matter, Ella has to face her fear of being deemed less than normal by her friends if she still wants to be who she is.
Banned Old Friend
Ella starts her day normally and happily with a new case: the murder of Dr. Beth Daley, a child psychiatrist. But, Ella’s happy only lasts up until her brother calls her and tells her that he moved back to Detroit. Now, Ella’s whole family wants her back there as well. As she explains this to Lucifer and Chloe, Lucifer quickly disagrees. Chloe follows his lead albeit very hesitantly.
Ella moves the topic back to the case and tells them about a patch of hair stuck underneath the victim’s nails. As she heads out to examine it, Chloe goes to check up on Dan who has Beckett Wilson, the girl who called the body in. Before Ella could leave, she discovers a child hiding in Beth’s closet.
The child, Felix, was a patient of Beths. His father, Anthony, explains that the kid went back to get his violin and discovered Beth’s body. However, the kid says he didn’t see who did it.
In the lab, Ella’s old friend Ray-Ray (Charlyne Yi) surprises her. Ella freaks out but, Chloe comes in and finds Ella talking to no one. Ella quickly distracts Chloe with the hair they found. Apparently, it’s synthetic fur, and the stain on it wasn’t blood. It was ketchup.
As Ella prepares to head back to the crime scene, she turns to Ray-Ray and tells her to go away. Apparently, Ray-Ray is a ghost that Ella started seeing after the car accident she was in when she was eight. She felt special as a kid. But, when Ella began telling her friends about it, her friends didn’t think she was the right kind of special. It was only when Ray-Ray told Ella that she’s there to help her solve Beth’s murder did Ella allow her to stay.
Furry Friends
Upon searching Beth’s closet, Ella finds the furry suit that the patch of fur came from. Meanwhile, Chloe discovers a threatening voice message from a woman who seems to be fighting with Beth over someone named Wesley. Taking Ella’s idea, Chloe puts on the furry suit and goes into the convention that Beth was supposed to attend to find Wesley. As she’s asking some people, someone tackles her to the ground. And it turns into an all-out furry brawl.
On the other hand, Ray-Ray slips and reveals that she’s been lying to Ella. She tells Ella that she’s there because of a more personal reason. And that’s to solve Beth’s case so she could go into the peaceful afterlife. And no matter how upset Ella is, she just can’t say no to a friend.
Chloe manages to hold down her fort and arrests the woman who attacked her. Upon questioning, the woman reveals that Wesley isn’t a guy. He was a character she claims Beth copied and basically stole from her. And if a real man isn’t worth murdering for, what more for a character? However, she also mentions that Beth did say something about having fought with someone. But, she doesn’t know who.
Dan’s Favorite Ride
Unfortunately for Dan, Beckett (Madeleine Coghlan) tricked him and ran away. He enlists Lucifer’s help, and they track down the girl to an amusement park. As they follow the tracker, Dan admits that he hates amusement parks. Apparently back when he was 12, he took the prettiest girl in town to one. Unfortunately, he had a good amount of chilidogs before they hopped on a ride. And the rest they say, is history.
Lucifer tracks down Dan’s phone to the roller coaster. And Dan finds Beckett on the front seat. The girl once again slips from his grasp. But luckily, Lucifer gets ahold of her before she could get far. Sadly for Dan, the safety seat belts are already locked in place, and he’s stuck to the ride, forced to relive those haunting memories.
Meanwhile, Ella goes back to the victim’s house with a fresh perspective along with Ray-Ray. While looking around and having small talk, Ella once again catches her friend lying. Ray-Ray admits that she is there for personal reasons but, not Beth related. It’s to convince Ella not to move back home. Because in Detroit, Ella only has her leech brothers. In LA, she has friends that truly appreciate her. Suddenly, they hear the doorknob jiggling, and the two run into the closet.
A masked man enters the house and takes something from a drawer. He’s about to go when Ella accidentally moves the brooms in the closet. The man finds Ella, and she fights him out with a broom. The man snatches it from her but, ends up running away the last second.
A Twist of Music
After the ride, Dan comes to find Lucifer printing his roller coaster face on shirts and caps. He asks where Beckett is and realizes that the girl has one-upped them again. This time, however, she nicked Dan’s badge and Lucifer’s car keys. The only good thing is that Lucifer managed to get Dan’s phone back. Beckett didn’t mind to leave a little note in there saying “Sorry not sorry losers.”
Back in the precinct, Ella wiped off a few traces of chalk and rosin from the broom the burglar stole from her. The clues lead the women to Felix’ music teacher, Jonathan Burke, who also worked in the same school as Beth. Upon interrogation, Burke immediately confesses to being the burglar.
According to Burke, Felix had massive star potential. And when the kid rose to stardom, he didn’t want to be left behind. However, Beth recommended that Felix take private lessons and be homeschooled which is in contradiction to what Felix’s father said when they found Felix in Beth’s closet. It would force Felix to leave Burke, so the man tried to bribe Beth to change her recommendation. The day Ella saw him, he was taking back his check. Unfortunately, even if the man’s motive isn’t entirely off the deck, he also has an alibi.
Clue By The Nose
Meanwhile, despite all Dan’s efforts, Beckett completely slips away from him and Lucifer. Lucifer enlists Maze’s help to track the brat down. And even as Maze finds it incredibly hilarious, she agrees.
Maze successfully finds Beckett at Lucifer’s bar. Dan goes into full cop mode and asks her to tell the truth. This time, she admits that she didn’t see anything at all. Becket only said she did so she could skip the first period. From everything Beckett said, Dan did gain one clue: perfume. Beckett’s waterworks weren’t all acting. She says that the room reeked with Freesia perfume which she was allergic to.
On the other hand, Ella almost tells Chloe about Ray-Ray. But, Ella changes her mind at the last second. Chloe misunderstands and asks if Ella wants to talk about the whole moving back home thing. Ella refuses, and Chloe goes on to tell her that whatever her decision would be, it wouldn’t be the same without her.
They then get back to the case, and Chloe reveals her hunch based on what Dan found out. They head on to Felix’s house. As Chloe heads on inside, Ella scouts the construction garbage nearby.
Not Normal is Special
Chloe talks to Felix’s mother and notes her perfume: Freesia. Soon, Chloe finds out that Anthony lied to them. Burke was telling the truth. Meanwhile, Ella finds the missing murder weapon in the garbage. Ray-Ray warns her just in time as Anthony tries to swing a bat at her head. Ella ducks away from a few close calls with Anthony’s bat. Luckily, Chloe arrives just in time.
Apparently, Anthony was upset over Beth’s recommendation. Felix was already too much of an introvert. To Anthony, Beth’s advice would only make his son worse. And when Anthony came to confront Beth, Felix followed his father. The child’s been covering up for him ever since.
As they’re wrapping up the case, Ella grabs Chloe and spouts the whole ghost truth. Despite the overload of information, Chloe graciously takes it all in stride. She assures Ella that she doesn’t think she’s crazy and that nothing would make her change how she sees her. After their tear-filled hug, Ella tells Chloe that there’s no moving back to Detroit that’s gonna happen anytime soon.
As Ella parts with her fears, she also parts with a friend (not totally, of course. You can never truly say goodbye to Ella). Instead of telling her to keep away, Ella invites Ray-Ray to check up on her once in a while.
Lucifer’s Visitor
Back in the precinct, Lucifer gleefully hangs a commemorative poster of Dan’s face on the roller coaster ride. As Ella parts with him, however, he notices her new quip “Smell you later.” Lucifer asks where she got it from and she tells him it’s from her friend Ray-Ray.
Later on in Lux, one of Lucifer’s siblings visits him. The angel of death (aka Azrael aka Ray-Ray) reunites with her favorite older brother. Lucifer takes that moniker with a little hint of sarcasm. After all, she’s only reached out to him now after several thousand years. Azrael apologizes and says she misses how he always listened to whatever’s on her mind. She also explains the whole Ella situation.
It turns out; she’s the one who sent Ella out to Lucifer. Lucifer almost erupts into another one of his manipulation tirades. But, Azrael explains that since she couldn’t really be with them both, she could at least put two of her most favorite people together. As Lucifer turns around to offer his sister a drink, she’s gone as quickly as she came.
Later on, Lucifer visits Ella as she’s working at the lab. Lucifer commends her choice to stay. And he sits down to listen to whatever’s on her mind just like he did with his little sister.
