The Love, Simon series is switching streaming platforms. From Disney+, the spinoff series to the 2018 hit film will be moving to the Disney-controlled Hulu. The series which has also been officially titled Love, Victor is set to debut during Pride Month in June.
As it may, those aren’t the only pieces of good news for fans who’ve been waiting for the show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has already commissioned a writer’s room to start exploring possible stories for a second season. This comes just after the series wrapped production on its 10-episode first season.
Love, Victor revolves around Victor (Michael Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School, the same school from the film. The story follows his journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation. When things get too difficult to navigate, he reaches out to Simon for help.
According to reports, the move of the series was due to Disney’s concern over its adult themes. This includes alcohol use, marital issues, and sexual exploration. Disney+ execs feared that this might not resonate with the family-focused viewers that are the streaming platform’s main audience and highest priority. And they believed it would be a better fit on Hulu which is already home to a number of young adult shows. With its move Love, Victor will be joining other teen comedy-drama Hulu originals PEN15 and Looking For Alaska.
This isn’t the first time Disney is moving one of its shows to other platforms. As pointed out by Variety, Disney’s High Fidelity starring Zoe Kravitz was set to launch on Disney+ before being moved to Hulu. Again, the reason for this is because of its mature content. Although, Disney+ isn’t also completely free of violence and more mature themes. Its shows The Simpsons and The Mandalorian is a testament to that. It has also tackled topics of identity and sexuality but, in a family setting. Its first series featuring a gay character Andi Mack is also now available on Disney+.
In addition to Cimino, Love, Victor’s cast includes James Martinez, Ana Ortiz, Isabella Ferreira, and Mateo Fernandez. Love, Simon screenwriters and This Is Us EPs and co-showrunners Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker are returning to serve as showrunners on Love, Victor. Nick Robinson, who starred in Love, Simon, is also partaking in the series as executive producer and narrator. Brian Tanen, Jason Ensler, Isaac Klausner, Marty Bowen, Adam Fishbach, Wyck Godfrey, Adam Londy, and Pouya Shahbazian are also executive producing. 20th Century Fox Television will be producing.
