Live-Action My Hero Academia Movie in Development

The One Piece live-action adaptation isn’t even out yet, but Netflix is already gearing up for another film based on a beloved anime property.

THR reports that Netflix and Legendary Entertainment have teamed up for a live-action adaptation of the hit anime series My Hero Academia. Obi-Wan Kenobi scribe Joby Harold has been tasked to write the script for the feature-length film, and Shinsuke Sato (Bleach, Death Note) has been tasked to take the director’s chair.

The story of My Hero Academia follows Deku, a kid who is obsessed with his hero All Might who is granted powers by his idol and is then placed in a school where he has to train and become a superhero; and in a world with heroes, there are bound to be equally powerful villains.

What’s funny is, when the anime came out, a lot of people have been saying that it basically took the premise of Disney’s Sky High—which also followed a group of kids who were going through superhero school. I guess when it comes to MHA though, they have a unique world set up where 80 percent of the population has powers (or quirks), and the training to keep them gets specifically convoluted.

Admittedly, Netflix does have a reputation for botching anime adaptations, but as long as they’re willing to try, I’ll be keeping an open mind.

As of now, no release date has been set for the My Hero Academia live-action feature film.
