Two weeks ago, a rumor was going around that How to Train Your Dragon director Dean DeBlois was working on a live-action adaptation of the hit animated movies, and as it turns out, they’re actually true.
According to Variety, DeBlois is returning to write and direct a live-action How to Train Your Dragon and the movie is set to come out on March 14, 2025. We don’t have any hints at the story or any official concept art, but we can probably assume that we’ll be coming back to the world of Berk and its interesting relationship with dragons.
With the original animated films managing to hold up after all this time, I think the wrong move would be to directly adapt the story of Toothless and Hiccup for live-action. If anything, they should just expand on the story, especially with how open-ended The Hidden World’s finale turned out.
If anything, they can even choose to tell the story of a completely different character. After all, the series is titled ‘How to TRAIN Your Dragon’, and Hiccup was a pretty established dragon rider by the end of the show. How about another character who finds a bond with a dragon and tries to train them from that point?
With Disney being critiqued about how boring their live-action adaptations are, maybe Universal and Dreamworks would do well to go a more creative, exciting direction. Then again, those Disney movies do make a lot of money, so maybe there’s a benefit to going the nostalgia route.
Catch the live-action How to Train Your Dragon when it hits theaters on March 14, 2025.
