The Official Disney Retelling
Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda will be joining the Disney team alongside legendary Disney composer Alan Menken. Miranda’s involvement with the “Little Mermaid” movie is not yet confirmed. But he said in an interview for Variety that he will be writing new songs for the retelling of the classic Disney movie.
He explained that he would love to take on a role in the film but as of the moment, he is the guy who is up for anything the Disney execs would give him.
Disney’s ” The Little Mermaid” has no official cast list yet.
Troubled Universal Production
Out of the three live-action adaptations, Universal was the first to announce a live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid”. But Universal’s “ The Little Mermaid” is in troubled waters.
It was announced in 2015, Richard Curtis would be writing the script and Sofia Coppola as the film’s director. But Coppola ultimately dropped out of the project due to creative differences with her team and Universal.
Chloe Moretz was in talks for the lead role stepped back from the project because she wanted to take a break from acting. Her replacement hasn’t been announced yet.
There is no release date or production date for this live action adaptation.
Loose Indie Adaptation
Chris Bouchard and Blake Harris directs the loose indie adaptation of the ” The Little Mermaid”. The story follows a young girl and her reporter uncle trying to track down a woman rumored to be a mermaid. The movie stars Downtown Abbey’s Poppy Drayton, The Royal’s and Narnia’s William Mosely.
It’s very different from the classic tale Disney fans know and love. The indie film features the little mermaid trapped in a circus freakshow.
