Maroon 5 has released a funky, breezy new single called “What Lovers Do,” from their upcoming sixth studio album. The song has the frontman Adam Levine’s signature falsetto and features neo-soul singer SZA’s smooth vocals, giving flair to the pop song. Her addition to the song gives it more identity, a more upbeat sound carried by breezy synth pads. SZA’s polymorphic sound blends well with the band’s pop sound as the two singers harmonize about being lucky in love.
Who is SZA?
The vocals joining Adam Levine in Maroon 5’s new song is an indie-R&B songstress known as SZA. She enters the song on the second chorus and bridge echoing Levine’s concerns about falling into a new relationship.
She is known for her unfiltered and soul-filled album “CTRL” with songs such as “Supermodel” and “Drew Barrymore.” On paper, it looks like her sound would not mesh well with Maroon 5’s generic top 40 sound. But SZA’s chill and smooth vocals blend well with the band’s new synth pop vibe.
SZA is currently on tour and is also working on new music. Collaborating with Maroon 5 gives her more exposure to a wider audience.
Maroon 5’s Collaborative New Sound With SZA
“What Lovers Do” is the third single from their upcoming sixth album. It is a follow up to the band’s previous hits “Cold” featuring Future and “Don’t Wanna Know” featuring Kendrick Lamar.
It looks like their sixth album will be a collaborative piece featuring upcoming breakout artists such as SZA. Helping their band transition their sound from the lite rock sound they are known for. Maroon 5’s latest singles sound like they are falling into the chill-tropical genre.
Listening to “What Lovers Do” you can tell it’s a stretch from their previous songs. Recruiting SZA, whose sound is not cookie cutter pop compared to Maroon 5. It’s a more refreshing sound with such a chill vibe.Their two previous songs were well-received. It’s more than just evolving as artists, the band can easily adapt to new music trends without overwhelming their audience. Instead, it creates more hits for Maroon 5.
