It’s incredible how a minute and a half’s worth of footage can make you emotional and overly nostalgic. Jon Favreau’s live-action remake of 1994’s The Lion King has been a long time coming, and now we can already see what the film would look like (and what we’d all feel once the full trailer and the movie itself comes rolling in).
The Lion King trailer opens with Mufasa’s famous monologue about “everything that the sun touches” and a majestic view of the African savannah kingdom. It’s a beautiful montage, one that would take you back to the original movie’s aesthetic. But what made the trailer even more emotionally gripping is when Rafiki lifts Simba up as “The Circle of Life’s” intro plays. Seriously, I had a really hard time holding back my tears!
The teaser then wraps up to one glorious roar from an all-grown-up Simba. Beautiful, just beautiful.
The Lion King also boasts of a stellar line up consisting of Donald Glover as Simba, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Billy Eichner as Timon, John Oliver as Zazu, and Keegan-Michael Key as Kamari. Beyoncé also stars as Nala, with James Earl Jones reprising his role as Mufasa.
The Lion King hits theaters July 19, 2019.
