Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Still Hopeful for Star Wars Return

A franchise like Star Wars has an infamously toxic fandom, and they have successfully bullied several people offline from Episode I actors Ahmed Best and Jake Lloyd to newer faces like Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran. The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has also been a target of this vitriol, and while some would think he would put SW behind him, he’s still pretty much eager to take on the franchise again.

Talking to Variety, Johnson was asked if he was still eager on completing the trilogy that was announced earlier, to which he replies, ‘God, I hope so.’ Though we haven’t got an update on those films for years, Johnson says that it ultimately boils down to his schedule. He explains:

I have talked to Kathy [Kathleen Kennedy] about it and we’re still talking about it… I had such an amazing experience making ‘The Last Jedi.’ It’s entirely a matter of scheduling. For me, putting this [‘Glass Onion’] out and making the next one of these…the answer is I don’t know.”

Back before the toxic fans made hating The Last Jedi their big internet movement, there was a lot of positivity surrounding Johnson’s future in the franchise, and it was announced that he would be making his own set of movies apart from the Skywalker Saga.

We don’t really know what happened specifically, but Lucasfilm seems to have made a switch in course after TLJ, and we got properties heavy on nostalgia-baiting from The Rise of Skywalker to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

I’ll admit, I was starting to feel pessimistic about Star Wars after Kenobi, but Andor is a very fresh take and it isn’t afraid to try anything new. Hopefully this marks a new direction the franchise is moving, but then again I could be speaking too soon.

Johnson’s trilogy has no release date yet, but you can watch out for his next movie, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery coming to Netflix on Dec. 23.
