After starring in kid-friendly properties like Eternals and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Kumail Nanjiani is set to star in a more adult series that explores the true crime story behind one of the most popular male stripper brands today.
Watch the first teaser for Welcome to Chippendales:
The official description reads:
A sprawling true-crime saga, “Welcome to Chippendales” tells the outrageous story of Somen “Steve” Banerjee, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire—and let nothing stand in his way in the process.
Though the character of Steve Banerjee is at the center of the teaser, his story is also tied with Nick De Noia (Murray Bartlett), who was the Emmy-award-winning producer who was said to be responsible for rebranding the Chippendales brand to become the global hit that it is today.
If you do your research on Banerjee and De Noia, you’ll know that their story does not end well, but I guess it does make for an interesting true crime series. With Pam & Tommy creator Robert Siegel behind the series, I can imagine that Welcome to Chippendales will have a pretty interesting take on the story as a whole—and not just with the drama between Banerjee and De Noia, but also the exploration of women’s sexuality and their decision to exploit it on a global scale.
Though Nanjiani is best known for his comedy work, I am eager to see him take on a more serious role. He’s completely capable with his run in The Twilight Zone, and I can’t wait to watch him tell this story.
Welcome to Chippendales comes to Hulu on Nov. 22.
