Krypton’s season 2 premiere screamed BIGGER and BETTER. And it seems the series has no plans to stop emphasizing those points. This week’s episode was a whole other ride on its own. Krypton sprang up so many surprises making a raging rollercoaster of emotions, reunions, and betrayals. The best part is “Danger Close” introduced a bigger threat to Krypton that could take the narrative to a whole other level. It comes just at the right time before the mid-season episode strikes and it gives plenty of time for the narrative to shape up nice and good.
In this week’s episode, the battle is now solely in Krypton. Adam (Shaun Sipos) and Seg (Cameron Cuffe) had immediately set out to their respective plans to bring down Zod (Colin Salmon). But, it seems that the world is solely against them at this point. They do, however, discover some key points that can help them tip the balance if they get out of their ordeals alive.
Reunited With Old Friends
While Seg rested up after they got to Krypton, an old memory surfaced in his dreams – the first time he met Lyta (Georgina Campbell). And it’s just as sweet and naive as any first love story could go. As Seg was escorting a drunk Kem (Rasmus Hardiker) back home, he stumbled upon a Sagitarii looking through some handmade gifts. It turns out, it was Lyta who was looking for a gift for her soon to be betrothed. You can almost literally see the sparks flying out of the two as they flirted their way through the conversation.
Unfortunately, Kem fell from his spot and both Seg and Lyta helped him up. Seg noted that it was the very first time a Sagitarii helped him. And with that cheery thought in his mind, he turned around only to find Brainiac’s (Blake Ritson) smiling face greeting him and jolting him awake.
When Seg and Adam get back to Kandor, Adam thinks they’ll be hatching a plan together. Unfortunately for him, Seg has already put his mind on doing it alone and made it clear via his “I’m doing it alone” face. Before Adam could sulk about getting sidelined any further, Seg sincerely thanks him. And it’s more than enough consolation as it renders Adam literally speechless. So, he gives Seg a nice big teddy bear hug instead. After all, the guy doesn’t get thanked often. While Adam heads back to Wegthor, Seg heads up to meet the Primus. And guess the first thing Lyta and Seg do when they finally meet? Sex.
Short-Lived Victories
On Wegthor, Kem wakes amidst a pile of dead Sagitarii courtesy of a rebel attack. Aarame (Kae Alexander) and the rest of her team round him up along with the rest of the surviving Sagitarii. Back in the base, the rebels celebrate their small victory. The next plan is to take over the elevator base using the supplies they intercepted from Zod’s forces through Nyssa’s (Wallis Day) intel. In the midst of the celebrations, Adam arrives caught by one of the rebel guards.
Later on, Adam relays the good news to Val (Ian McElhinney). However, there’s something bothering him. Before returning to Krypton, Adam caught a glimpse of the future while using his zeta beam but, there was nothing. He bumped into a wall. It’s like time itself has stopped. And he’s worried that it might be his fault, that somewhere along the way, he fucked up. Val tells him otherwise and advised him to stick to the pressing problem of the present, namely General Zod.
Meanwhile, after their eventful reunion, Seg tries to reason with Lyta about Zod’s rule. But, she’s resistant and adamant that they’re doing the right thing for Krypton. When Seg repeats a line from the first time they met, Lyta’s nose starts bleeding. But, she quickly brushes it off to stress. Later on, she takes Seg to meet Cor-Vex. And she also surrenders Seg to General Zod.
As Zod marvels at his father’s supposed triumph over Brainiac, Seg warns him that he’s going too far with his ambitions. But, Zod could only talk about how much more they could achieve together with the Els and the Zods working together. Even as Seg tries to talk to him as his father, Zod wouldn’t stand down.
Relics of the Past
In the Outlands, Jayna (Ann Ogbomo) and Dev (Aaron Pierre) have made peace with each other. And to further prove her sincerity, Jayna offers to listen to anything Dev has to say. He starts off by recalling what happened after General Zod and Lyta took over Kandor. Dev became a commander of a group of Sagitarii. And one of their missions was to sniff out and eliminate hiding rebels in Wegthor. In one mission, they found an underground tunnel filled with civilians. Though there wasn’t any immediate threat of rebels, Lyta ordered the place to be bombed. Seeing he won’t cooperate, a couple of men in his team worked together to knock him out. One other man who was on Dev’s side who witnessed all this was Kem.
When Dev woke up, he knew all those civilians were dead and he was probably now a criminal. Thankfully, Kem saved his ass. Though visibly shaken, Kem gave Dev all the means to escape back to Kandor. The first thing he does back at Kandor was to visit Lyta, look her in the eye, and hold her accountable for hundreds of merciless and unnecessary civilian deaths. Because of this, Dev chose to let go of Lyta saying “I want nothing to do with you anymore.”
Despite these facts, Jayna still wants to believe that there is some good left in Lyta. And for Dev, if he were to join Jayna, he needed to know what she would do if Lyta gets in the way. Though Jayna couldn’t give him a concrete answer, she promises that she’ll listen to him. Right now, they’re not merely two ex-Sagitarii. They’re partners.
Consequences of Glory
As Seg gets cleaned up and checked out (RIP to his badass beard), he notices one of the medics and immediately recognizes Raika (Sonita Henry). As he approaches her, she doesn’t remember anything of him. But, when he starts blabbering about their times in the catacombs, she suddenly starts screaming. Soon, she’s sedated by the other medics. But, Seg immediately notices her nose bleeding just like Lyta’s before.
Thinking fast, Seg uses his name as the father of Zod to gain access to the reconditioning chambers they were taking Raika to. Once there, he simply confirms his suspicions that the machine retains memories from the reconditioned persons with the mechanic before he knocks him out. Then, he starts scanning for Lyta’s reconditioning. But, nothing comes up.
Back in Wegthor, Nyssa rushes to Val about the intel she stole from Aarame. And they discover that Jax has built a bioweapon capable of wiping out specific DNA codes in one click. It could easily mean genocide. Unbeknownst to them, however, Jax had already built her first bomb programmed to wipe out every last Sagitarii on Wegthor. And she hands it over to Aarame to use at her signal.
Meanwhile, Adam finds Kem among the prisoners and the two reunite. (I admit I missed their sarcastic exchanges so much). Seeing that Kem’s willing to do anything in line with Seg, Adam gets him into the elevator base mission. He’s hoping that Kem’s integrated Sagitarii biodata can get them in. As soon as they get there, however, the sensor doesn’t recognize Kem. Luckily, he uses his data scrambler and gets them in. When they get to the main office, another problem arises. They got the wrong keypad access code.
The End of the War
On the other hand, Seg’s fairing a little better on his end. Placing the mechanic on the reconditioning chair, he finds Lyta’s own reconditioning scene. Before he could dig in further, Zod arrives. Seg is swiftly overpowered and placed on the chair to start his reconditioning. After the whole ordeal though, he wakes up to Brainiac’s grating voice. After getting his bearings back, it’s like Seg supercharges and knocks his guards plus the mechanic out. The frightening thing is when he looks into the monitor, he finds two people screaming in pain instead of just one – him and Brainiac.
Meanwhile, the rebel ground troops are closing in on the Wegthor elevator base. As soon as Aarame informs Jax that the key doesn’t work, Jax finds the oxygen levels of the ground troops plummeting. At that moment, she realizes they’ve been played. Zod contaminated those oxygen supplies. Soon enough, the entire ground troops were dead on the ground suffocated.
In an act of desperation, Jax gives Aarame the signal to detonate the codex weapon. In a couple of seconds, she was able to explain what the hell it is to Adam and Kem before she presses the button. But, nothing happens. It turns out, Val has taken the codex. The stupid thing is, he gave it to Nyssa who was already well on her way escaping with it.
Even though the ground troops were compromised, Adam and Kem chose to go through with the mission. They knew there was a chance they were going to die. But, before they could force their way into the office, they are cornered by Sagitarii. It turns out they were simply waiting for them. Then, the door to the main office opens and reveals Lyta. And only five words come out of her mouth “The end of the war.”
Krypton continues next Wednesday, July 10th, with “A Better Yesterday” at 10/9c on SyFy.
