Krypton Season 2 has left Season 1 in the dust hot damn! From the revelations of the first episode to the surprises of this week’s episode, Krypton has really upped the ante. But, I have an inkling that this week’s episode titled “Ghost In The Fire” is kind of a watered down version of what’s about to go down in the next few weeks. Nevertheless, it has been one of the most fun episodes to watch up to date on Krypton. Lobo’s (Emmett J. Scanlan) quirks are definitely something to watch out for. And even the Zods have something up the sleeves that take them so far from what we know of them from the first season.
In this week’s episode of Krypton, Seg (Cameron Cuffe) and Adam (Shaun Sipos) try to find a way out of Lobo’s clutches. Meanwhile, Nyssa (Wallis Day) carries out her orders from General Zod for the sake of her son. Unknown to her, it’s her son who provides the much-needed comfort for Lyta (Georgina Campbell) whose grief was starting to rear its ugly side.
Krypton’s Creation
In the Outlands, Doomsday makes a split second appearance when he takes down two unprepared skimmers with his bare hands. And Lyta thinks this was partly their fault. They have been deploying untrained and ex-Rankless Sagitarii out to these Doomsday search missions and against the rebellion. And she proposes to train them. However, General Zod only allows her to do so as long as she stays in Kandor.
There’s more than one character out there in the Outlands. Last season, Lyta shot her mother in the midst of her duel with General Zod. But, Jayna (Ann Ogbomo) was saved by someone who oddly looks like her brother. They took to the Outlands where they have adapted. And with a warm campfire to keep them warm, the brother and sister reminisce about the Kryptonian creation story of Flamebird and Vohc. According to this story, Rao tasked Vohc with the creation and Flamebird with the destruction. They chased each other in a cycle with Vohc’s creations getting better and better until he finally created Krypton as they know it.
Meanwhile, Seg and Adam wake up in Lobo’s campsite. And one of the first things the maniac does is to throw Adam’s Zeta beam into the stream beside the campsite. When he discovers that none of the two men know who he is, he gets a little offended. But, honestly, his atrocious introduction is honestly one of the highlights of this episode. Scanlan plays his overbearing and hilarious confidence so well. Plus, he gets some of the best lines on the show. Before Lobo could proceed to gut them and torturing them with each other’s guts, Seg makes a deal. Since Lobo’s also looking for Brainiac, Seg offers to take him to the body of the fallen alien in exchange for their freedom.
Back to the Old Times
General Zod sends Nyssa up to Wegthor to be his double agent. Unlike Season 1 Nyssa, this one seems to still have the same resolution but, less of the cunning. Val (Ian McElhinney) and Jax (Hannah Waddingham) greet her warmly. They also comfort her over her father’s untimely death. However, as soon as she admits that General Zod sent her, the other two immediately become suspicious. As a consolation, Nyssa gives them information about Zod’s next moves in the next solar flare. Jax confirms the information but, keeps Nyssa under heavy guard.
Later on, when she’s finally left alone for a minute, Lyta contacts Zod. It turns out, what Zod really wants is the codex. Somehow, this makes me feel that Nyssa has other motivations behind her double agent role aside from keeping Cor safe with the codex involved.
Meanwhile, Lyta has started training the unexperienced Sagitarii General Zod wrenched from the rankless before. Being the new primus, she is as brutal as her mother. One of the cadets catches her eye and for a moment, her vision betrays her and she sees Seg. This vision distracts her in the duel and the cadet manages to land a hit on her. However, Lyta still manages to win and make him beg for mercy.
A New Host
As Seg and Adam lead Lobo to Brainiac’s remains the maniac blabbers their ears off. Apparently, his grudge against Brainiac is personal since the alien bottled up his home. But when they get to the scene of the crime, Lobo’s sensor doesn’t detect any Brainiac. As Lobo gears up to tear the two men down for breaking the deal, Seg manages to deflect the oncoming hook with his mind. Lobo loses grip of the sensor and it lands on Seg’s feet beeping madly. Brainiac is inside Seg.
Lobo begins assault immediately but Seg seems to have developed telekinetic powers. He can even speak to Adam through his mind. And he seems to have developed otherworldly kind of fighting skills with Brainiac’s influence. Unfortunately, Lobo’s brute strength is on par with his current strength and the psychopath manages to pin him down. Luckily, Adam grabs Lobo’s blaster and blasts a hole through their enemy’s stomach. But, as Lobo lies still on the ground, his stomach starts to regrow. And according to Seg/Brainiac, they only have 3.14 minutes to get away.
Grief Unleashed
On the other hand, after the Sagitarii training, Lyta asks the cadet she fought with, Lor-Ran (Toby-Alexander Smith), to stay. Strangely, Lyta allows herself to open up to him a little. She even allows him to caress her face. But, when he tries to kiss her, she recoils. “You’re not him,” she says before brutally raining a series of punches down his face until his blood decorated the floor.
After Lyta’s sudden outburst on cadet Lor-Ran, General Zod asks for an explanation. And Lyta admits that her grief has gotten the best of her. Whenever she sees the new Krypton they have, she only sees what she lost. In an attempt to cheer his mother up, General Zod brings in Cor-Vex and allows Lyta to cradle him. He explains that Seg’s legacy lives in him and Cor. And if Lyta wanted to help honor it, she could do so by raising the future. And though Lyta seems taken with the child, Zod’s face says there’s another plan underneath it all.
A Promise For Tomorrow
In the Outlands, Jayna and her brother continue to journey until they reach a chain of establishments nested out in the snow. And Jayna declares that she must continue the journey alone from that point. She says goodbye. But, as it turns out, she never had any living person beside her all this time. Her brother was but a fragment of her mind that helped her survive. It was quite the bittersweet scene where Jayna was standing alone on the snow and behind her were only one set of footprints.
As Jayna enters one of the taverns, one of the men recognizes her. But, with one swift punch, she knocks down the man and gets her peace and quiet. Unfortunately, a group of Sagitarii enters the tavern a couple of minutes later specifically looking for her. The man she knocked out earlier tips them off and Jayna engages the Sagitarii. Before the last of the bunch could fire his blaster at her, a hooded figure comes to Jayna’s rescue. The man lowers his hood to reveal Dev-Em. Surprise, surprise!
Meanwhile, after getting away from Lobo, Seg and Adam make their way back to Lobo’s camp to retrieve the Zeta beam. Unfortunately, Seg estimates that he only has around 2 and a half hours before Brainiac takes over the driver’s seat. At the camp, Adam easily finds the Zeta beam. But, Seg stops him from taking them home. Brainiac is still inside him. And he couldn’t take him to Krypton with them. He proposes getting Brainiac out first. However, if nothing works, he makes Adam promise him something: kill him. Then, his eyes melt into the pitch black pits of darkness that is Brainiacs.
“Krypton” continues next Wednesday, June 26th, with “Will to Power” at 10/9c on SyFy.
