'Krypton' Season 2 Premiere 'Light-Years From Home' Recap: The Last Sons

Holy crap, Krypton is now a whole other world! It’s bigger, better, and more exciting than anyone could’ve ever guessed. And it’s a prequel that is slowly and successfully living up to the caliber of its source material. The season two premiere wasted no time and jumped right into the juicy bits of Krypton. It immediately made it clear how the show’s scope has greatly expanded showering us with new baddies and intriguing character arcs. Now that the timeline’s broken and not strictly anchored to the Superman arc, it’s Krypton freedom. And by the looks of it, there are high hopes that this season would definitely trump the first.

Kryptons season two premiere jumpstarts six months after Brainiac’s defeat. General Zod (Colin Salmon) and Lyta (Georgina Campbell) are on one side ruling new Krypton. While Nyssa (Wallis Day), Val (Ian McElhinney), and Jax (Hannah Waddingham) are on the other side leading a rebellion. As these two groups play hide and seek with each other, Seg (Cameron Cuffe) and Brainiac escape the Phantom Zone. From there, Krypton gets a lot more interesting.

Krypton’s New Ruler

Adam returns to Kandor and is surprised to find the reign of Zod well into its way after Brainiacs defeat. And just before the Sagitarii sees him, someone pulls him towards the shadows. Adam turns to his savior to see Jax-Ur with a new robotic eye. But, before he can say anything, she knocks him out.

Adam wakes up, later on, to find himself in a hideout among Seg’s old allies including Nyssa, little Cor-Vex,  Mama Zed, and the real-life Val-El whom he’s surprised to actually meet. Then, Adam reveals that for the past six months, he traveled back to the future. There, he found that General Zod conquered Earth and soon after, Brainiac bottled it up. In turn, Val updates him on what happened between Seg and the Phantom Zone. And he reveals that Zod destroyed the projector he can use to retrieve Seg. He tried to rebuild it but Zod seized the Fortress. Soon after Brainiac’s fall, Zod took control of the Sagitarii and immediately started annexing to the other Krypton cities. Then, he freed the rankless and recruited those who are willing to the Sagitarii. Those who resisted were never heard off again.

So now, they’ve recruited Zod’s enemies and gathered the resistance at Wegthor where a self-sufficient mining colony exists. This colony is where Zod is getting the fuel for the intergalactic fleet he’s building. Unfortunately, while Adam was gone, he saw what this fleet has done or has already been doing. Zod’s just not conquering other planets, he’s also eradicating its people. And he’s transforming these planets all into Krypton copies to fit its people.

Old Allies and Old Foes

Meanwhile, Raika (Sonita Henry) is being surprisingly being tortured by none other than Lyta for information about Doomsday’s whereabouts. However, the poor woman couldn’t give her any locations. After the creature broke loose, it slaughtered most of the Cythonites. Then, the remaining survivors were rounded up by Zod. Raika also has no idea what happened to Jayna-Zod after Lyta shot her. Seeing that she has no further information to give, Lyta green lights whatever mental conditioning is planned for her. And it seems that Raika isn’t the only one in that situation.

Talking to her son, she questions his decision to pool their resources to locating Doomsday instead of permanently ending the Wegthor rebellion. But, General Zod explains that it’s all for the survival of the Kryptonians. Since the destruction of Krypton is inevitable, he’s preparing other planets for their people to transfer to. Once they have Doomsday under their control, they can pit him against Brainiac and let the two destroy each other without one Kryptonian life lost. So, Lyta suggests taking charge of quelling the rebellion. In a small moment of doubt, Zod questions Lyta’s loyalty to him. But, she assures him that she’s only using her past relationships with the rebels to find them.

In the Phantom Zone, Seg is sentenced to suffer the illusions of his own mind. But, on one such occasion, the illusion of his grandfather actually hands him the way to get out of the damned place. It’s the sandstone. However, as Seg uses it to pierce the veil, his grandfather’s illusion turns back into Brainiac. And together, they’re pulled out of the Phantom Zone.

Brainiac’s Home

Seg and Brainiac end up in the latter’s home planet Colu. And since some of Brainiacs chips were damaged by the radiation from Seg’s sandstone, he decides to keep Seg around. According to his logic, they need each other to survive and to get off the planet. Then after that, they could get back to killing each other.

Along the way, Brainiac pauses and shares a sweet little story about his origins. Once before, Colu was a technological marvel. But, his progenitor wanted to expand his conscience so he merged himself with artificial intelligence and Brainiac was born. He realized that he could further increase his chances of survival by spreading himself throughout the galaxy but, this resulted in the extinction of his race. He became the last son of Colu. Hearing this, Seg makes his final decision. Contrary to Brainiac’s logic, Seg jumps into the air, fist bared.

Back in Krypton, Adam still believes that Seg is their best hope in defeating Zod. He proposes using his Zeta beam to get to him. But, Val discourages him due to the great risks. Adam is insistent, however, and convinces Val to let him do it. On the other hand,  Nyssa gets a lead on the answers she’s so desperately seeking after finding out she’s a clone. Jax tries her hardest to prevent her from rushing to anything without any assurance. But, like Adam, Nyssa can’t be deterred.

Nyssa finds her father in the cleaning up in the sewers. It seemed that he survived the skimmer crash. But, he doesn’t look too good anyhow. Nyssa demands answers about the night her mother died. And Daron (Elliot Cowan) apologizes for everything. However, before he could start explaining, his head is blown off. And Lyta and the Sagitarii arrive to arrest Nyssa.

A Mother’s Bond

Later on, Mama Zed arrives at the headquarters back in Kandor tense and without baby Cor-Vex. Jax immediately senses something wrong. And no sooner than done, a Sagitarii shoots Mama Zed from behind. Adam grabs his Zeta beam and saves Val and Jax some time as the latter grabs the precious codex. Then, the two cross over through a portal. And Adam escapes through his Zeta beam.

Lyta takes Nyssa to General Zod. And as the two women argue, Lyta makes it clear that she believes that what she and Zod are doing is honoring Seg. After all, General Zod is also Seg’s son. If he has Seg’s blood in him, good wouldn’t be that far along for him. Arriving in Zod’s room, Nyssa finds her son in his arms. General Zod uses the child to go against the resistance and convince Val to surrender. If she refuses, Zod would take Cor and raise him as his own.  On the other hand, Val and Jax are forced to leave Nyssa behind to prioritize the rebellion as they head to Wegthor.

A New Foe

After escaping the Sagitarii, Adam successfully lands on Colu. There, he finds a disconcerted Seg standing over Brainiacs cracked skull. And after a moment’s disbelief, Seg pulls Adam into a tight hug. Laughing, he admits he missed the “Earthman.” That reunion is probably one of the best moments in this episode.

As the mood sombers, Adam tells Seg about what happened to future Earth. Ironically, while he was trying to save the last son of Krypton, he became the last son of Earth. Continuing to catch-up, Adam tells Seg about Kandor, Zod’s rule, and his little Cor-Vex. And since Adam upgraded his Zeta beam, he could transport them both to Kandor easily. However, Colu’s magnetic field is messing up with the device’s settings. They try to head to higher ground to clear it up but suddenly, they hear a howl dangerously close by. Running in the opposite direction, they bump into Lobo. And they don’t even get the chance for introductions before the alien mercenary knocks them both flat out. Chaining their feet together, Lobo drags them off through the woods.

“Krypton” continues next Wednesday, June 19th, with “Ghost in the Fire” at 10/9c on SyFy.
