SyFy’s “Krypton” has just capped off its first season and it couldn’t be any less merciless. Fans will have to bottle up their emotions for quite a while as they wait to see what happens to Krypton after that surprising twist.
Going back, Brainiac has finally stepped foot on Krypton. And despite the threat hitting home, that’s when the Zod’s finally decided to settle their differences. It wasn’t a pretty family reunion. And Jayna’s still MIA. On the other hand, Seg (Cameron Cuffe) has to deal with his own family reunion. Sadly, it seems that every family reunion that this guy’s in turns disastrous more than others. However, this might be their last chance to save Krypton.
Last Hope
Brainiac’s ship has arrived on Krypton, and the people are in a panic. The dome’s collapse has left Kandor vulnerable to the intolerable frost of the Outlands. If people don’t find a warm place to hide in, they’ll all freeze to death. Amongst the chaos, Seg and the others found each other. Together, they all go back to the Fortress.
Dru-Zod (Colin Salmon) reveals that Val-El (Ian McElhinney) is alive and he may be their last hope of defeating Brainiac. Apparently, before Val crashed to his imminent death, he transported himself to the Phantom Zone. There he stayed with the General until Zod stole Val’s escape device and used it for himself. Now that they’re caught in dire times, Zod uses the device once again to pull Val out of the Phantom Zone.
The grandfather and grandson revel in their reunion. And Val marvels at who his grandson has become. Unfortunately, he breaks their hopes and tells them that it is all in vain. There is no stopping Brainiac. Meanwhile, Dev-Em (Aaron Pierre), Jax-Ur (Hannah Waddingham) and the people of Kandor all watch as Brainiac’s ship releases its tentacles and drives them into the city’s ground.
The Lesser Evil
Val reveals that in his time in the Phantom Zone, he’s seen a multitude of possible futures of Krypton and all of them end in Brainiac’s victory. He’s even seen the next planet that Brainiac has his eyes set on, Signus 4019. Val also explains that when Brainiac takes a world, time seems stops for everyone living there. As he explains, it’s revealed that Adam’s heroism had him transported to one of the conquered planets which seems to be horribly similar to Earth.
As the men continue to banter, Nyssa (Wallis Day) and Lyta (Georgina Campbell) slip away. Meanwhile, Dev tries to rally the remaining Sagitarii who haven’t turned tail and ran. However, they all opt to do the same. Luckily, Lyta arrives and knocks some sense back into them after beating their acting commander down. Similarly, Jax-Ur is prepping her men to cross the Outlands to the other cities in the hopes of saving the codex that’ll guarantee the survival of their race.
In the meantime, Seg and his son, Zod, are scouting the tunnels for a safe passage for the people. While they’re there, Zod suggests sacrificing Val and the knowledge of the future that he holds to Brainiac in exchange for Krypton. Seg adamantly refuses. And Zod tries to give him the guilt trip. In addition to that, he tells Seg that the reason that Lyta never said anything about Seg is that he was included in the bottling of Kandor.
On the other hand, Nyssa takes a trip to the Genesis chamber and fetches her unborn son. Jax-Ur meets her on the way out. And like a true mother, Nyssa defends her child. However, Jax-Ur rendered her speechless when she insists that Nyssa has no idea what she’s helped her father create.
Nyssa’s Real Past
Without intending to, Lyta sends the Sagitarii on suicide missions to a counterattack against Brainiac. She deeply regrets it. However, it has distracted Brainiac enough to allow Seg to guide the people to the tunnels.
On the other hand, Jax-Ur hands her man the codex and promises him that she’ll be at the rendezvous point. Then she shows Nyssa the Varo Protocol which her father created. She crushes Nyssa’s childhood as she reveals that the real Nyssa died with her mother when their skimmer crashed. The Nyssa now is only a clone. And her memories are only implants saved from the remaining neural connections before her real body died.
Meanwhile, as Seg and Zod finish rounding up the citizens, Zod turns to head to Brainiac. Seg tries to stop him and reminds him that sacrificing Val means sacrificing the universe. However, Zod is set on saving Krypton and only Krypton.
The Exchange For Krypton
Zod goes through with his plan and offers Val to Brainiac. Zod uses Val’s prediction to convince Brainiac. And his only assurance is that a being with higher intellect has enough integrity to stay true to their deal. In turn, the alien scans Zod and ensures that his intentions are pure.
Meanwhile, Val tries to argue with his grandson that his death is the only way to prevent Brainiac from gaining the information he has. However, whatever plan Seg has in his mind crashes as Brainiac enters the Fortress on Zod’s lead. The outside world has also already started to freeze in time as Brainiac’s ship casts its dome on the city.
Seg tries to threaten Brainiac that he’ll kill his grandfather but, Brainiac doesn’t believe an inch of it. It turns out everything was just a ploy to get Brainiac right where they wanted him as they entrap him the Phantom Zone. As the alien’s getting sucked in, Superman’s cape rapidly starts to rebuild itself. However, full-fledged success isn’t something that seems to exist in Krypton. Brainiac’s tentacles shot out to drag Seg into the Phantom Zone with him. Val grabs ahold of his grandson, however, as Seg notices what’s happening to Superman’s cape, he tells his grandfather to believe again in a better tomorrow and releases his hand.
The Rise of Zod
Brainiac’s ship crumbles, and its dome around the city disperses. Val tries to get to his machine to pull Seg out of the Phantom Zone but, Zod tosses him aside and blasts the machine to pieces. The whole program crashes and the insignia on Superman’s cape change into that of the Zods.
A month after Brainiac’s defeat, Zod has taken over the council. The rankless are given purpose, and they are made into Sagitarii. Kem (Rasmus Hardiker) is one of those given this new fate. Val, on the other hand, is stuck on repairing his machine to save his grandson. Nyssa and Jax arrive together in the Fortress to presumably help him. In the council room, Zod proclaims a new era for Krypton as he reunites all the cities by forcing the other city leaders to bow down to the name of Zod.
‘Krypton’ Season 1 Overall Verdict
SyFy’s “Krypton” has proven to be one of the best prequel series in existence. And with the news of its renewal for the second season, it seems that it’s going to garner even greater credit.
From the beginning, “Krypton” has swiftly taken a course with its own story. From the establishment of characters and plot in the pilot episode, the series has gone on a smooth, but anticipation filled ride. It perfected that build up that was needed for an explosive but opportunity-laden finale. “Krypton” is literally making history with all the mysteries and questions that it has let loose in the final episode.
Seg’s realization at that moment certainly ensured the future’s safety. But, who’s safety? Krypton might’ve made the Zod’s into a split of good and evil but, the Zod sigil doesn’t seem right on that red cape. There’s also that anticipation at how Krypton’s entire future will go now that Brainiac didn’t rip the city from the ground and set Krypton on a time bomb. Oh and let’s not forget Doomsday. Sadly fans can only satisfy themselves with the millions of theories that are bound to arise in the wait for the second season. But, with how this season fared, hopes are high on the second season. The wait is already looking to have so much mental pain but, if it’s all worth it then why not?
