'Krypton' Season 1, Episode 7 'Transformation' Recap: The Rebirth of Kandor [SPOILERS]

The failed coup of last week’s “Civil Wars” was a huge setback for everybody on “Krypton.” Now, everyone has to start from scratch. The good thing is, it has set almost everyone on the same side. House divisions don’t matter one bit anymore when survival is all that matters. Despite having a common enemy, however, it’ll always remain difficult to overlook the gigantic history of lies and deception in “Krypton.”

In “Transformation,” we get an unveiling like never before. From a change of clothes to life-changing decisions, we get to see our beloved Kandorians turn a near 360 degree. After all, they have to if they want to save Krypton and survive.

Daron-Vex Finds a New Master

“Transformation” kicks off with Jayna-Zod (Ann Obgomo) successfully escaping the clutches of Brainiac’s sentry. But the rest of her team isn’t so lucky. After the failed coup, Daron-Vex (Elliot Cowan) immediately tries to rectify things with the Voice (Blake Ritson). However, with the man’s fingers around Daron’s neck, Brainiac’s sentry reveals himself.

Upon hearing Brainiac’s misguided vision of eternal life, Daron aligns himself with the monster claiming that they have the same goals. Brainiac’s agent questions Daron’s lack of belief in Rao. And Daron reveals that his parents were Cythonites. When the Voice came to power, he ordered a purge of all other believers who refused to convert to the faith of Rao. After that, Daron never saw his parents again.

To prove his allegiance, Daron admits to planning the coup and gives up the names of the others with him. This includes Nyssa (Wallis Day). To please his new master, Daron agrees to punish these traitors by execution. Sensing something was wrong, Nyssa tries to hightail out of the guilds. However, she is too late, and she is an arrested.

Nyssa Faces The Greatest Betrayal

Seg (Cameron Cuffe) and Lyta (Georgina Campbell) take General Zod to Kem. As they fuss over Nyssa’s son, Kem (Rasmus Hardiker) fills them in on what happened. Lyta is shocked to hear her mother’s name on the list of traitors while Seg is horrified to hear that Nyssa is also on the executioner’s block. He immediately sets himself to get her out. Lyta interferes. However, Seg insists on account of Nyssa willingly saving Lyta’s life on his request.

At the Fortress of Solitude, Adam (Shaun Sipos) seeks Val-El’s (Ian McElhinney) help to fix his Zeta beam. Val quickly notices that Adam’s a little too snappy and prefers to operate the systems on his own. Like a real grandfather, Val pursues answers. Adam finally answers that he’s frantic to get his Zeta beam fixed so he could go back home to Earth.

In the guilds, Daron pays a visit to his daughter. After a few words of remorse, he shoots her point blank in the head. Someone harshly presses a knife to Daron’s throat and he quickly realizes that the Nyssa he shot was merely an apparition.

Down in the streets, Lyta finds Dev (Aaron Pierre). Together, they prepare to search for Jayna. As they sift through the equipment they got from the black market, Dev asks Lyta if her feelings for him were true. Lyta explains that when she told him “I love you,” she was on the verge of death and was expressing her gratitude for his constant support and friendship. Despite that, Dev thanks her for caring enough to lie.

Lyta Locates Her Mother

Back in the guilds, Nyssa takes the upper hand from her father. Seg comes just in time to stop Nyssa from doing the same thing her father almost did to her. As they pry answers from him, Daron insists that he knows nothing and he had no choice but to serve Brainiac.

Seg prevents Nyssa from shooting in hopes that Daron would get them out. However, the second Seg releases Daron, he knocks the gun out of Nyssa’s hand and runs for the guards. Fortunately, they manage to fight off the two Sagitarii with Nyssa impressively surviving on her own. They then use the Sagitarii uniform to escape.

On the other hand, Adam is spiraling into self-loathing. He explains to Val that he came to Krypton in hopes that he’ll finally be a real hero. However, as it is, Adam screwed up with Seg. Now, all he wants to do is go back home and send someone worthy enough of a list of superhero nicknames just like Superman.

In the Outlands, Lyta finds her mother in the Jewel Mountains. At that moment, however, Dev reveals that he didn’t survive the sentry’s attack after all. Lyta and Jayna refuse to join him back to Kandor to surrender themselves. When Dev attacks them, Lyta is forced to pull the trigger on him.

Enemies Unite

For appearance’s sake, Daron urges the Voice to continue the closing of the Nova cycle festival. Daron also suggests heightening the Voice’s security, however, the Voice rejects. Instead, he introduces the Red Shard, his personal guardsmen forged from Jayna’s loyal Sagitarii. Speaking of Jayna, as they head back to Kem’s bar, Jayna tells Lyta the truth. She attempted the coup and pledged her allegiance to the Vex’s all in exchange for Lyta’s life.

After which, Lyta introduces her son to her mother. After a staring contest between the grandmother and grandson, Jayna finally asks the question everybody’s been dying to ask. Who’s General Zod’s father? Sadly, General Zod doesn’t know who his father is. According to him, his father was one of the soldiers who died in the failed attack to Brainiac.

Meanwhile, Seg finds out that Nyssa learned to fight from a female ex-lover from the military guild. Then Nyssa humbly thanks Seg for saving her life. Suddenly, Nyssa’s little humble moment is interrupted by a team of Sagitarii. Nyssa quickly kisses, Seg but despite their efforts, the Sagitarii recognizes them. The Sagitarii manages to corner them. However, Lyta, General Zod, and Jayna arrive just in time to save the pair.

Seg succeeds in convincing the rest of the team to trust each other for them all to survive despite old grievances. And to get the army that they need, Seg plans to provoke the sentry on the end of the Nova cycle celebrations. Once the people see what the Voice is,  Seg hopes that they’ll join them in their cause.

Brainiac Brings the Rebirth of Krypton

Back in the Fortress, Val-El manages to repair Adam’s Zeta beam. He stops Adam from rushing back off to Earth, however, and asks the lad to reconsider. Val tells Adam that being a hero is making the decision to help others and that he could still set things right.

With newfound hope, Adam concedes. However, it’s not towards the noble goal that Val was aiming for. Adam decides to stay to kill General Zod and stop Seg from destroying Brainiac. Before he leaves the Fortress, Adam wipes Val’s memory of their conversation clean.

Back at Kandor, the Voice continues to end the Nova cycle. Meanwhile, Seg and the others take the position to blast the hell out of Brainiac’s sentry to piss him off to the max. But, before Seg could release the signal, one of the Voice’s assistant’s jumps forward and accuses the Voice of being an alien. The Voice doesn’t silence her, however. Instead, he steps into the fire and lets it engulf him.

Using the people’s faith in Rao, the upgraded prophet cajoles the people into his version of eternal life. To further reinforce that, he also erases the boundary between the Gilded and the Rankless. To the horror of Seg and his companions, the people rejoice and hail the Voice as their new hero.

“Krypton” continues next Wednesday, May 9th, with “Savage Night” at 10/9c on SyFy.
