Up to date, “Civil Wars” is “Krypton’s” most action-packed and revelation induced episode. Every few moments, I had to take a breather to recover. In the last episode, the wheels of Kandor’s civil wars started spinning. However, it’s not that simple anymore because there’s not Brainiac and the Voice of Rao to worry about. As Seg (Cameron Cuffe) and Lyta (Georgina Campbell) found out, the greatest enemy of Krypton’s survival is time itself.
House Zod Lay Out The Plans
As Black Zero’s Commander explains how he got the Zod necklace, Adam (Shaun Sipos) comes along and points a blaster at the man’s head. Unlike Lyta, Adam knows him well as General Zod (Colin Salmon), Superman’s greatest enemy.
Meanwhile back in Kandor, the sentry infested Voice of Rao is questioning Ona’s faith, gauging her worth. And in the chief magistrate’s office, Daron, Nyssa, and Jayna are discussing their plans to overthrow the voice. The plan is to rig the private ceremony of the Voice to end the Nova cycle with explosives. Daron (Elliot Cowan) and Nyssa (Wallis Day) assure Jayna that their back-ups are guaranteed should the plan fail. Jayna (Ann Ogbomo), on the other hand, assures them that she’ll complete her own team once she drags Dev-Em into the plan.
Back in the outlands, Adam confirms that General Zod is from his time, the future. In turn, General Zod reveals that Brainiac isn’t from the future. He also reveals that that dreaded monster is going to succeed with his plans. Kandor will be destroyed, and Krypton will explode in 200 years time. Seg turns the gun towards Adam realizing that his friend has kept all these secrets all to himself all this time.
According to Commander Zod, House El, and House Zod survives Brainiac’s attack. And the Commander has found a weapon that is powerful enough to stop Brainiac hidden in the catacombs. He gives Seg the sigil that marks the door to the weapon. It looks like nothing of the Kryptonian houses but, it definitely looks like the emblem Seg saw when he was escorting Ryka to safety. Commander Zod sees the recognition in Seg’s face and begs him to take him to the door. Adam protests but, Seg is already far too taken with Commander Zod’s story.
Dev-Em Joins the Cause
True to her word, Dev’s loyalty is to Jayna. She gives him a full chance to back out. But, after a tense conversation, Dev puts his complete trust in Jayna’s decision to join House Vex in their cause.
Meanwhile, Seg calls out Adam for sending them all on this quest without even knowing the full story. But, Adam insists that he had to for Superman. He realizes, however, that if the villain going back in time to halt the birth of Superman isn’t Brainiac, then it must be General Zod. And if they were to preserve timelines, they have to step back and let the destruction of Krypton happen as it should.
In the ceremony for the end of the Nova cycle, prisoners are pardoned and released as a symbol of Rao’s mercy. One prisoner, a Black Zero bomb maker, doesn’t clear the scan, however. Dev appeases the lieutenant guarding the scans. And Nyssa comes to his rescue. Dev successfully escorts the man out of the building. But, the lieutenant remains suspicious.
Speaking of suspicions, Seg’s doubt increases even as Adam explains Superman’s origin story and why he’s called the last son of Krypton. Adam begs for Seg to consider the future but, Seg is focused on the here and the now. In the end, they cuff Adam to a post and go off on a search for the sigil together with General Zod.
As Seg, Lyta and General Zod navigate the catacombs, Zod reveals his friendship with Seg’s son and his dislike of Seg’s grandson. For Zod, Superman has allowed Earth’s egocentric beliefs to bury his Kryptonian heritage. The General also admitted to their family’s feud. However, he says that he has never taken pleasure in it.
Jayna Takes the Road of No Honor Once Again
Once again, the sentry/ Voice of Rao tries to cajole Ona. He offers her a chance to be with her mother for eternity. And he tells her to consider it well for it will determine her entire future.
In Daron’s office, Jayna refuses to permanently silence the suspicious lieutenant who’s been asking around about the strange prisoner. She strongly questions Daron’s motives. It leads to Daron admitting that his number one on his priority list is himself. However, his number two is the people of Kandor which is why he aims to ally with the eight other cities of Krypton for all their well-being. He reminds her that it’s possible for people to do things for more than one reason.
Dev intercepts the said lieutenant on his way to ask for an audience with the voice. Despite Dev’s attempts to redirect the lieutenant’s attention, the lad pushed on. He heads straight to the primus’ office and gives Jayna his report. Jayna praises him, telling him that he’s a good officer but in the end, her decision leads her to cut the young officer’s life short.
Meanwhile, as Adam tries to talk his way to escape, he and his guard are ambushed by a group of Cythonites. Cythonites also ambush Seg, Lyta, and General Zod in camouflage. However, before all that, General Zod reveals that Lyta was part of the team that invaded Brainiac’s ship as the monster ripped Kandor from the ground. This failure weighed heavily on Lyta and turned her bitter. This is also why she fashioned General Zod to be a weapon to protect their world above all else. And, he takes great pride in that. Despite that, Lyta realizes that Zod only recognizes Seg as the father of his best friend. It seems that no matter what, their future together is dim.
The Voice Changes Schedule
Daron’s plan is in full motion because of Dev’s handiwork. As they plot, Ona tells the Voice her decision to serve Rao as she is now. The Voice accepts her decision, and Ona hugs him. For a confusing second, the sentry puts his hand on top of Ona’s head as if to comfort her. Then, he decides to show her his true face. Before he could take off the mask, Dev and his entourage arrive to take the Voice to the ceremony.
The Voice tells Dev that he’s changed his decision. He wants to invite the public to the ceremony. He then sends the Sagitarii to spread the words as quickly as possible. Dev reports this to Jayna and Daron to which the latter insists on going through with the plan. Dev refuses to recognize Daron’s opinion and turns to seek Jayna’s decision. To his disappointment, Jayna agrees with Daron.
Everything goes smoothly in the ceremony until Dev comes up front and center and alerts the room of the bomb. People immediately panic. The Voice of Rao retreats and Dev watches as people step over each other in the commotion.
Seg, Lyta, and General Zod Discovers the Weapon of Krypton
After the ambush, Seg, Lyta, and General Zod find the door with the sigil. Zod tries to open it with bombs. However, it doesn’t budge one bit. Seg realizes that the strange sigil is a combination of the El and Zod house sigils. With that knowledge, Seg tries the old trick with the blood of the house. He sacrifices a few drops of his blood but, with only his blood, the door still won’t budge. As General Zod adds his blood to complete the formula, Adam arrives shouting for them to stop.
Adam explains that whatever is inside the vault will kill them all. Zod and Seg ignore his warning and opens the vault to reveal a creature frozen within. The Cythonites arrive, and Adam appeases them. He continues to explain that the creature is called Doomsday, a soulless killing machine that destroys everything in its path. Ryka and the leader of the Cythonites come forth to back him up. They explain that it was a creation of the Zods and Els together which they wrongly thought could save the world.
As the vault closes again, General Zod’s anger flares and he starts shooting at the Cythonites. Both groups exchange fire. Luckily, Seg finds an exit. Before Zod could make it through, he was shot. As they head to safety, Seg banishes Adam and tells him never to come back. And in turn, he reaffirms his allegiance with General Zod except that he’s not allowing Doomsday. They have to find another way.
Back in the guilds, Dev escorts the Voice safely back to his chambers. As they reach the room, Dev turns around and reveals a Sagitarii ambush. However, the Sagitarii are in for a terrifying surprise. The Voice takes off his mask and shows his pitch black eyes. Before anyone could take another breath, the sentry victoriously strikes them with his black tentacles.
