When director Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” hit theaters last year, fans and casual moviegoers welcomed the film with open arms. Gal Gadot went on to become one of the best iterations of the heroine since Lynda Carter in the 70’s, and Warner Bros. greenlit a sequel to the standalone movie. Now we’re learning that Cheetah, one of “Wonder Woman’s” constant foes, is going to be in the sequel, played by “Saturday Night Live’s” Kristen Wiig.
The first “Wonder Woman” movie featured Doctor Poison and Ares as Diana’s main villains, as it also focused on the repercussions of chemical warfare during World War I. It was a welcome feat for Jenkins since the first film did well in introducing the superhero in the big screen. However, longtime fans of DC’s famous animated movies have always wondered when Cheetah will come into the picture.
According to Deadline, Wiig is in talks with Warner Bros. and DC to play the role of Cheetah. Although nothing is confirmed, it looks like this deal is likely to close, and we’ll finally see Cheetah lock claws with Gadot’s “Wonder Woman.” Wiig’s “SNL” stint proved her prowess in various acting roles, and so it could be a cherry on top for her career to be able to play Cheetah in “Wonder Woman 2.” Should Wiig close in on a deal with the studio, Cheetah will be her very first big screen villain role. And since the sequel is a top priority movie for Warner Bros., it’s very likely for us to find out new details about Wiig’s casting soon.
“Wonder Woman” is scheduled to premiere in 2019.
