‘Knives Out’ Official Trailer: A Family Murder Mystery To Be Unraveled

Lionsgate has just released the first trailer for Knives Out. Director Rian Johnson heads back to his murder mystery roots after his start in the genre with his 2006 film “Brick” and “The Brothers Bloom” that came out in 2008. Johnson then took on more ambitious studio projects such as “Looper” (2012), and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017). Before taking on a new trilogy project in the Star Wars franchise, Johnson returns to smaller-scale film making. 

What We Know About Knives Out

The movie follows a family gathering gone horribly wrong. The family’s patriarch and renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his home after his 85th birthday. When detectives Benoit Blanc and Elliot arrive at the estate to investigate the death, they find themselves entangled in twisted family secrets. Now they have to sift their way through a web of lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.

During the Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation in April, Johnson compared his film to the murder mysteries of Agatha Christie, adding that the film has a “Hitchcock thriller-type twist”. Johnson also added, “The idea was to take everything I love about a great Agatha Christie story and put it into a new original story set in modern-day America, that’s kind of the essence of it.”

2019 has been a tough year for Lionsgate with most of its films being a hit-or-miss situation. Knives Out is set to be released later this year, and with any luck, this film can also be a hit in the box office. Nevertheless, films such as “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “Five Feet Apart” became major hits this year. In addition, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum became the highest grossing entry in the John Wick Franchise, and it’s also set for a fourth entry in May 2021.

Knives Out Cast

Johnson has assembled an impressive cast to star in the film, from Avengers Captain America, Chris Evans (Ransom Thombrey) to James Bond, Daniel Craig (Det. Benoit Blanc). Knives Out also stars Ana de Armas (Marta), Jamie Lee Curtis (Linda Thrombrey), Toni Collette (Joni Robinson), Don Johnson (Morris Robinson), Michael Shannon (Walt Thrombrey), Lakeith Stanfield (Det. Elliot), Katherine Langford (Meg Thrombrey), Jaeden Martell (Jacob Thrombrey), Christopher Plummer (Harlan Thrombrey), and Riki Lindhome (Donna). 

Knives Out hits theaters November 27th.
