It looks like there are two new films expected to be of high priority to Warner Bros. and the DC Extended Universe. “Justice League Dark” and “Batgirl” are currently rumored to start production after James Wan’s “Aquaman” wraps filming. It is expected to hit theaters next year, with it being the sixth installment in the DCEU.
Fast Tracking Justice League and Batgirl?
After “Aquaman,” the final schedule for the films slated in the DCEU continuity has been left in total chaos. Following the negative reviews that “Suicide Squad” and “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice” last year, Warner Bros. is reportedly considering the schedule of film in the franchise. The final decision would come after “Justice League” hits theaters this fall, and from its performance both critically and theatrically.
The Hollywood Reporter says that in addition to Patty Jenkins not yet confirmed to direct “Wonder Woman 2,” the studio is also looking to put its effort into “Justice League Dark” and “Batgirl.” Joss Whedon is set to write and direct “Batgirl,” while Doug Liman has just stepped down from “Justice League Dark.”
If these news jives with Warner Bros. plans, then it’s very likely that the studio is on the hunt for the new director for “Justice League Dark.”
Ironing Out The DCEU’s Film Slate
It’s interesting how this supposed tactic is rolling out contrary to what Warner Bros. have initially planned. If you would remember both “Aquaman” and Ezra Miller’s “The Flash” would have been filming now (except for the former) and are set to be released in 2018. But following the recent departure of two directors for “The Flash” over creative differences, the fate of the Scarlet Speedster’s film is hanging by a thread.
This minor fallout is also affecting “Cyborg,” “Green Lantern Corps,” and “Shazam,” as all of these films are in development and is set to arrive sometime between 2019-2020. With what’s happening in the DCEU now, this too can change really soon.
