Just a Boy from Tupelo: Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Gets a Making Of Documentary

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis was one of the best-received musical biopics in recent memory, and the film had just come out on HBO Max. To hype up the release, WB has dropped a new documentary short called Just a Boy from Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen.

Check this out:

The docu short essentially has everyone involved in the movie talking about how they helped bring Elvis to the big screen; even some of Presley’s childhood friends were present, just talking about how he was influenced by gospel music.

You also have to give Austin Butler some props for all the work he did in trying to recreate Elvis, even doing a lot of the musical performances himself. It was said that he was so immersed in the role that even today he’s been told by others that he hasn’t been able to shake the accent even after they’ve filmed the movie.

With Presley being such an iconic talent in pop-culture, it’s pretty interesting to see a modern biopic try to tell his story and you can bet that Luhrmann was the right director to deliver that story with as much spectacle as he can.

Here’s the official synopsis for Elvis:

From his rise to fame to his unprecedented superstardom, rock ‘n’ roll icon Elvis Presley maintains a complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker, over the course of 20 years. Central to Presley’s journey and happiness is one of the most influential people in his life — Priscilla.
