Meryl Streep may have played Julia Child back in 2009 with Julie & Julia, but Sarah Lancashire is blowing Streep out of the water with the new HBO Max series Julia. Just in, we have a new behind-the-scenes look at how Lancashire’s process on how she transformed into the TV icon.
Watch this:
Sarah Lancashire (Julia Child), executive producer and writer Chris Keyer and Daniel Goldfarb as well as David Hyde Pierce (Paul Child) reveal the preparation that went into creating a faithful rendition of the beloved on-screen chef.
Watching the video, you can actually see just how distinct Child’s voice is, and it’s kind of odd to watch Lancashire talking without the accent. It’s also revealed that Lancashire doesn’t have the same height as Child, and they actually had to resort to several TV tricks to get her to appear as tall as Child was (1.88m) when she was beside other people.
The show is still in its very early episodes, but so far the series has been pretty engaging. Besides the fantastic production when it comes to the period setting, the character of Julia Child is just so fun to watch, with her boundless optimism and spirit. While cooking shows are a dime-a-dozen nowadays, it’s really interesting to see just how absurd the concept was to men the time that it was first conceived.
Julia is now streaming on HBO Max.
