Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Episode 22 Recap - The Origin of Blind Obedience

The Doors

An apartment tenant complains to his landlord about his doors. Behind him, the lights flicker and a curse appears.

He is one of the three victims killed by a cursed spirit at their apartment entrance. They died the same way while complaining about their auto-lock doors not functioning.

Megumi, Nobara, and Yuji are in the backseat while the driver, Ms. Nitta, briefs them of the case. The correlation is inconclusive, but the three attended the same junior high for two years. They could have been carrying the curse since then.

On their way to investigate the school, they pass by another funeral with similar circumstances to the victims.

When they arrive at Saitama Urami East Junior High, Nobara approaches two delinquents to question them, but they suddenly turn polite. They both know Megumi; it was where he took junior high school.

Megumi was a delinquent who beat up others during his years studying there. A staff member, Mr. Takeda, arrives and recognizes him. He’s heard about the victims‘ passing. They were students at the school 20 years ago.

Megumi asks if there were bad rumors connecting the three of them. The delinquents remember the bungee jumping incidents at Yasohachi Bridge. Megumi remembers it as a place with frequent suicides and reckless dares.

The Bridge

Mr. Takeda recalls the four students skipped school together one day and failed to go home at night. They were found lying under the bridge, having no memory of what occurred.

The sorcerers head to the bridge to investigate. Takeda checks with Megumi to see if his sister Tsumiki is fine. He nods but remains tight-lipped.

Elsewhere, Geto makes Mahito choose between three cursed wombs. They feed it to a human for their next scheme, commanding the newly formed curse to attack.

The three third-years are sent to the bridge to wait for anything to happen. When nothing happens, they meet back at a convenience store to plan when one of Megumi’s ex-classmate appears. She admits having been at the bridge when she was a sophomore. She says she feels something lurking in their store.

She was at the bridge with two others, including Tsumiki. Megumi looks visibly stunned and calls for his sister’s safety. Sadly, only Grade 2 sorcerers are available. Ijichi tells them to retreat if things get worse.

Megumi realizes they have no choice but to exorcise it already. He tells Yuji and Nobara the case has been reassigned and sends them home. Megumi says he’ll talk to Takeda before following himself, but he proceeds with the mission alone.

Test of Bravery

He asks Ms. Nitta for the details of the job. The bravery test involved walking under the bridge. Megumi retraces their steps and looks for an unfinished domain, just like in the detention center. When he looks up at the moonlight, Yuji and Nobara arrive behind him.

Megumi sighs in annoyance, but the two don’t press him for any details. They only ask he rely on their help as his friends.

Megumi admits Tsumiki is currently in a coma. The Yasohachi curse appeared to her but did not spell her end. He wants to exorcise the curse already, but it’s gotten more dangerous.

The other two move forward and need no other explanation. They replicate the victims’ steps during their test of bravery, leading them to a river under the canyon. They feel the cursed energy barrier when they cross the river, taking them to the enemy’s domain.

A fight ensues, but another curse joins the fray — the one Mahito sent.

Our Thoughts

I got some legit Japanese horror vibes from this episode. The mood and atmosphere work were exquisite. 3.8/5.
