The Mandalorian: Jon Favreau on Reuniting Mando and Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett

The finale of The Mandalorian Season 2 had a huge pivotal moment when Grogu was taken away for Jedi training by Luke Skywalker, but all of this was somehow undone in a few episodes of The Book of Boba Fett. With some thinking the reunion kind of spoils the point of the Season 2 finale, show creator Jon Favreau explains the decision behind having a huge character moment happen in another show.
Talking to Empire, Favreau explains, “We couldn’t just hit a hard reset… It’s going to be interesting to see how this unfolds for people who may not have seen The Book Of Boba Fett. But I think The Book Of Boba Fett offered time to pass. You saw what Mando was like without Baby Yoda and we saw what Grogu was like without the Mandalorian and neither of them was doing too good. So them coming back together was a really good plot point that allows us to jump back into Season 3 while maintaining the central relationship.”
If anything, Grogu’s time with Luke wasn’t for nothing, as he was still able to get some sense of his Force abilities. The only main difference is that he decides to stay with Din as a Mandalorian—a culture which kind of had its development based on fighting Force users.
I don’t really know where the thread with Grogu is planning to go, but the third season seems to be building up to a Mandalorian war in order to reclaim the broken world of Mandalore. We know Bo Katan won’t take it despite her royal bloodline, but will the Mandalorians follow the true wielder of the Darksaber?
The Mandalorian Season 3 returns to Disney+ on March 1.
