Joker: Folie a Deux will Allegedly Change Harley Quinn’s Origin

Any comic fan knows that the origin of Harley Quinn deals with her being the Joker’s psychiatrist-turned-simp, but things could actually change for an upcoming depiction of Harley in Joker: Folie a Deux.
As per insider KC Walsh (via The Direct), they could be changing Harley’s origin so that she’s a fellow patient in Arkham rather than a doctor there. While some guess that the two could end up together and escape Arkham together, Walsh does reply with, ‘not quite.’
Of course, we should just take this as a rumor, but with the first movie already doing a lot of changes with the character like giving the Joker an actual name and giving him a mental disability of uncontrollable laughter, it would make sense for director Todd Phillips to add his own kind of spin with everyone else in the established DC lore.
While I would have loved to watch Harley’s downfall from doctor to wacko, I think that there could be an interesting direction they could go by making her a patient. Maybe she did have that origin where she falls in love with a patient and goes crazy, that’s why she’s in Arkham; but I think this version of the Joker could very much be more sympathetic to her rather than the manipulative sociopath that he’s always been when it comes to his relationship with Harley.
Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long before we get a proper first look at the film (which is also rumored to be a musical).
Joker: Folie a Deux comes to theaters on Oct. 4, 2024.
