'John Wick' Creator Derek Kolstad Joins Marvel's 'Falcon and the Winter Soldier' Series

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum has successfully gained its franchise-best earnings with $311 million worldwide. And now, John Wick creator Derek Kolstad is set to start on another huge project. Marvel has reportedly tapped him to join the writing team of the franchise’s upcoming Falcon and the Winter Soldier series according to The Wrap.  Though no exact release date has been set, the series is expected to air around 2020.

What To Expect for Falcon and the Winter Soldier

The miniseries follows Sam Wilson aka Falcon and Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier after the events of Avengers: Endgame. And it will likely focus on Falcon’s journey as he takes up the mantle of Captain America after the elderly Steve Rogers hands him his shield. The Fifty Dead Men Walking director Kari Skogland will be helming the six-episode mini-series. And Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are set to reprise their respective roles. Joining them are Emily VanCamp and Daniel Bruhl who will also reprise their roles as Sharon Carter and Helmut Zemo.

Though fans might expect Falcon to done Captain America’s stars and stripes in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, little is still know about what happens to Bucky. He’s just fresh off a massive war and the German’s brainwashing. However, it seems that Stan has some ideas. “I think it’s time for Bucky to go out there and have an identity outside of the circumstances that we’ve met him through,” Stan says at a convention in May as reported by Comicbook. “…he might do all kinds of things. He might even go on a date. I don’t know…I think it’s gonna be a lot of dealing with Anthony’s character and Anthony himself which is always another character.”

What’s Next for the MCU

In addition to Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios is also developing other mini-series featuring other beloved Marvel characters. One of these is WandaVision that’ll be focusing on the relationship between Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). There will also be a Loki series featuring the Asgardian antagonist in the mid-70s. Last but not least, Disney + will be releasing an untitled series following Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye/ Ronin.

According to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, these series will serve as a huge factor in the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “A post-‘Endgame’ MCU will be extremely different and extremely focused on Disney+ tying into our future movies,” Feige said in an investor event as reported by The Wrap. “These will be major storylines, set within the MCU, with ramifications that will be felt both through the other Disney+ series we’re producing and our features on the big screen.” Feige also teased to Mashable that these series would dig deeper into those certain characters that’ll change them in big ways. So, their next appearance on the big screen will be backed up by what happened in the series.

Aside from John Wick and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Kolstad is also busy writing the video game adaptation “Just Cause” for Constantin. And he has also recently sold his action movie pitch titled Booker to Sony.
