John Cena Teases Possible Role in Damon Lindelof's 'Watchmen' HBO Series

Thirteen-time WWE Champion John Cena might be on to something—at least, based on his mysterious Instagram activity since November 19. Cena shared a pair of photos from the “Watchmen” graphic novel, and it’s unclear if he is teasing a role on Damon Lindelof’s upcoming HBO series remake.
Cena has had a couple of movie roles in the past ten years. His very first film outing was 2006’s “The Marine,” and he then went on to star in the 2015 films “Trainwreck” and “Sisters.” Cena is also set to voice the lead character in the upcoming animated film, “Ferdinand.” However, based on the previous roles he had, especially on live TV, he’s more of a comedian than a superhero type of actor. Should he push through with a major role in HBO’s “Watchmen,” then the WWE Champ has big shoes to fill.
News of Damon Lindelof’s remake of “Watchmen” broke out last September, with the “Lost” and “The Leftovers” creator sharing a photo of Nite Owl’s statue. The series was eventually picked up by HBO and has been in development ever since. According to ScreenRant, Lindelof wants his “Watchmen” remake to be something that starts the rise of dangerous shows. “Watchmen – it was dangerous. And you can’t be dangerous for dangerous’ sake, but the reason that I’m doing this is these are dangerous times, and we need dangerous shows,” Lindelof said.”What we think about superheroes is wrong. We should not trust people who put on masks and say that they are looking out for us. If you hide your face, you are up to no good.”
Cena as Dr. Manhattan in ‘Watchmen?’
On November 19, Cena posted his first “Watchmen” Instagram tease featuring Comedian’s badge (more prominently known as the logo for the graphic novel). There’s no caption included, and it sent fans into a frenzy. And then, just last week, Cena again posted an artwork of Dr. Manhattan, leading more to believe that he’s telling his fans something. However, upon closer inspection of Cena’s entire Instagram feed, the wrestler randomly posts pictures about random things without a caption, so his “Watchmen” posts could also mean nothing. For one thing, he even shared an artwork of Beast from “X-Men,” but with the head of Beast from “Beauty and the Beast.” His latest post, dated December 3, 2017, is a Monopoly bankruptcy card.
Cena certainly has the looks of Dr. Manhattan, but when it comes to the acting chops, it’s still unclear. His posts could also spell out a minor casting role for him for the “Watchmen” TV remake, but everything is pure speculation at the moment. It could be something, or it could be nothing at all. After all, John Cena remains as cryptic as he can on Instagram.
