Jim Carrey is already Planning His Retirement from Acting

A lot of praise has been going Jim Carrey’s way for playing the villain Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, but what if that role is going to be his last?
In a recent interview with Access Hollywood (via Variety), Carrey admits that he’s already planning his retirement. He says, “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious… It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”
Admittedly, Carrey is far off from the goofy star that he was back in the 90s. He has since moved on to other, more artsy projects, and has revealed that he has a penchant for painting. He continues, “I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
If it’s any consolation, Carrey does open the door for a future project, as long as he likes the script. Though he plays over-the-top goofy in Sonic the Hedgehog, I really liked Carrey’s turn in the cancelled Showtime series Kidding where he plays a beloved children’s show host going through a mental breakdown. Besides the character study, I thought it was a meta role for Carrey, who himself had to deal with being a kids icon while at the same time struggling with his own personal problems.
Hopefully we haven’t seen the last of Carrey. Catch him in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 now in theaters.
