Marvel TV has had its highs and lows, but now the division is going through a massive shift in leadership. Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb is stepping down in place of the recently-promoted Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige.
Variety reports that Loeb’s exit comes just as industry insiders were shocked to realize that Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter will no longer have overall jurisdiction over Marvel properties including film, TV, and comics. A four-time Esiner award winner and longtime television executive, Loeb spearheaded numerous network shows (all of which had its hits and misses) and wrote multiple comic book storylines for Marvel. Among the current shows under his leadership are Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Cloak & Dagger, and Runaways. But that’s not to say everything was on a roll in the Marvel TV sphere. We’re all familiar with critically panned shows like Inhumans and the recent cancelation of the Marvel shows on Netflix.
A Deadline source also reveals that “Jeph has been thinking about making a change for a while, and now seemed the right time to take that step.” This is also made true by the lack of Marvel TV shows under Loeb that were announced to join the November 12 launch of Disney+. Most, if not all, of the announced series fall under the timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is all under Feige’s fiefdom. That’s when the future of Marvel TV was left in limbo as the streaming platform prepares to connect all its Marvel shows to the MCU with the likes of Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Loeb’s exact exit date wasn’t revealed, but it’s likely that the TV executive will hole up somewhere else given the competitive atmosphere of the current streaming era. For one, Loeb worked on NBC’s superhero drama Heroes from 2006 to 2008 before moving to Marvel TV in 2010. For two, he also had writing and producer duties on The CW’s Smallville and ABC’s Lost alongside JJ Abrams and Watchmen series creator Damon Lindelof. If anything, Loeb could easily ground himself in new shows for any network or studio in the near future.
