Jared Leto’s Joker will have his own standalone film, according to Variety. This is to expand the storyline of 2016’s Suicide Squad. The actor previously commented about his hopes of being featured more in future DCEU films and potentially even a solo movie. This is also because the Joker had short screen time in Suicide Squad. The solo Joker movie is an expansion of the Suicide Squad Universe, and Leto will executive produce and star in it as well.
It was announced last fall that Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese would also produce a standalone Joker movie, with Todd Phillips in the director’s chair. Apparently, the studio is planning to create a new sub-DC Extended Universe film franchise that focuses on original takes of various characters in the DC comics continuity. Joaquin Phoenix is set to give life to The Joker.
That said, Leto’s Joker film will lead to doors opening for other anti-heroes who appeared in Suicide Squad, one of which will be Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn movie. The flick will be based on the “Birds of Prey” comic with Cathy Yan as the director, and Robbie reprising her Suicide Squad Role. Robbie’s LuckyChap banner will produce the film, alongside Sue Kroll’s Kroll & Co Entertainment.
Details about Leto’s solo Joker movie are scarce, and the studio is also on a hunt for a suitable writer.
