If you’ve followed director James Gunn on social media, you’ll know that a mystery person on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been teasing him by dropping different Rick and Morty figures on his workstation every day. As it turned out, it was actually a group effort.
Gunn has shared on his Twitter that the figure culprits have been found—and they all work for the VFX department:
The #RickandMorty figure culprits have come forward; it was, as many have guessed, a group activity with our senior VFX wrangler Ron Underdahl, who started it all, video assist Porkchop, who made operations flow smoothly, & our VFX supervisor Stef, who financed the operation. pic.twitter.com/Zouz9SWtEY

Gunn added this about the big reveal:
“Many thanks to these guys for making every morning on the set of #GotGVol3 a bit more fun with a new figure from my favorite show. They announced themselves by one by one placing four new figures on the stand.”
While the prank has amassed quite an impressive collection of Rick and Morty merch, Gunn has said that they will be putting the figures up for charity, and that it comes with a certificate of authentication that Gunn will personally sign.
We know that creative always find ways to collaborate all the time, but it would be fun if Gunn actually found a way to work with Rick and Morty co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. We know that Harmon has his connections with Avengers directors the Russo Brothers, but it would be great if they could have some kind of cameo in the last Guardians film. I mean, if Seth Green can be Howard the Duck, there’s probably room for Roiland to voice some obscure Marvel character.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to come out May 5, 2023. Rick and Morty is now available on Adult Swim.
