James Cameron Says Next Avatar Films will Keep the Same Villain

To nobody’s surprise, the main villains of Avatar: The Way of Water were the humans who had no regard for the resources that they were taking, and though every huge franchise introduces us to a new villain every entry, James Cameron says that won’t be the case with his Avatar movies.

Talking to B TV Korea (via The Direct), Cameron explains:

“It’s not like a superhero story where there’s a new villain with every film. Same guy, right? Same adversary through the whole thing. But how he evolves is also very interesting once we bring in additional adversaries as we go along. Additional adversaries and additional allies.”

By “same guy”, I think Cameron is referring to the character of Quaritch, who has seen a huge change with his story, now that he’s been put in a na’vi body and he’s been given an emotional attachment in the form of a son—a son that specifically sides with his enemies.

Though I expect Quaritch and Jake to clash for several films moving forward, I think the show is kind of building up to a Darth Vader arc for Quaritch, in a sense that he will eventually side with the planet of Pandora and go against the humans—with the main catalyst being his son, Spider.

I’ll admit, the story of Way of Water was still pretty plain, but Cameron sure knows how to put on a show, and I think that’s why the movie managed to make so much in the box office.

Catch Avatar: The Way of Water now screening in theaters.
