There was a lot of anxiety with the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, with fans wondering if the film would make as much money as the first movie. With James Cameron already planning on making three more Avatar movies, the pressure was on for Way of Water to make its money back; the good news is, the film was a success and Cameron is officially pushing forward with the sequels.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron confirms:
“It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this, I’m gonna have to do these other sequels… I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is we’re going to be okay.”
With the Way of Water reintroducing us to the world of Pandora, the future films are now set to continue the narrative arc of the humans trying to claim the planet for themselves since their original home was already dying. It’s not about just finding precious resources anymore—the humans need to move to Pandora to survive as a species.
I’ll admit, the themes of the film are pretty simple, but Cameron just delivers them really well and with so much spectacle that it’s no surprise that the movie was able to connect to a lot of audience members. I’m just hoping the franchise manages to maintain its steam until the release of the last film.
