Universal Studios may not have been able to launch their Dark Universe with Dracula, but they can use the character in more interesting projects.
Just in, we have a final trailer for Renfield starring Nicholas Hoult as Dracula’s titular assistant, and Nicolas Cage as one of cinema’s most iconic monsters. Check this out:
Here’s the official description for the film:
Evil doesn’t span eternity without a little help.
In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Emmy nominee Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men franchise) stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
The film comes from director Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) with a story that comes from Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. While I thought the premise would have been great for a dark fantasy comedy, the film does lean heavily on some bloody action, with Renfield being able to unlock powers when he eats spiders.
Admittedly, Renfield is not one of the more popular supporting characters when it comes to Dracula’s lore, but that allows the film to really go wild with his characterization.
Renfield comes to theaters on April 14.
