A lot of fans were disappointed that Jennette McCurdy didn’t come back for the iCarly revival, but it seems like the former actress is adamant in her decision to leave the industry. Now McCurdy is coming out to tell her story of survival with her memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died, and we have a look at the cover.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, McCurdy explains:
“It was important for me to explore the emotional and psychological abuse I endured during my time as a young performer. I feel I didn’t have the tools, language, or support necessary to speak up for myself back then, so this book is a way for me to not only honor that experience and give voice to my former self, but hopefully to encourage young people to speak up for themselves in environments where they may be conditioned to just ‘play ball’ and ‘be a good sport.’ (Sorry for the sports idioms, I’ve never played sports so I have no idea why they’re spilling out of me.)”
McCurdy is probably best known for playing the part of Carly’s best friend Sam in the original run of iCarly, then she starred opposite Ariana Grande with the spinoff Sam & Cat. Throughout the entire time, McCurdy was said to have battled eating disorders and addiction, and things were said to have gotten worse after her mother died of cancer.
Admittedly, there have been a lot of questionable things about the child actor industry that have been revealed over the years. Besides McCurdy revealing her story, Shia LaBeouf has also revealed that he was under enormous pressure while he was working on Even Stevens—you can watch that in his movie Honey Boy. We haven’t even begun to talk about the things Dan Schneider is being accused of.
McCurdy’s book, I’m Glad My Mom Died comes out on Aug. 9.
