'Humans' Season 3, Episode 7 Recap: Emergency Contingencies

The fight is not over. The bombing during the memorial for Day Zero sparks something inevitable. The humans have decided to implement Basswood. Our heroes must face the consequences of one Synth’s actions. With allies lost left and right, the heroes find themselves in an awkward position. The Synths do not have the upper hand in this situation, so will they lose all they have left?

In this week’s episode of Humans, Max (Ivanno Jeremiah) confronts Anatole (Ukweli Roach) while Leo Elster (Colin Morgan) walks right into Anatole’s trap. Meanwhile, Mattie Hawkins’ (Lucy Carless) revelation boosts Laura Hawkins’ (Katherine Parkinson) will to fight. Amidst the chaos, Niska (Emily Berrington) finally meets “The Synth Who Sleeps.”

Motherhood

Katherine Parkinson in Humans

AMC

Laura’s world fell apart before her eyes. Her two children, Toby Hawkins (Theo Stevenson) and Sophie Hawkins (Pixie Davies) seem to have turned their backs on her. Not only di Anatole’s attack on her home tarnish her integrity, but she also loses everything she worked hard to earn during her time in the Dryden Commission in a matter of hours. Helplessly, she sits at a park bench Mia (Gemma Chan) had once taken her.

Despite all that, Mattie’s pregnancy changes everything. For a brief moment, we see Laura sulking at her defeat. Next thing we know, there she is, trying to get her spot back at the commission. Indeed, motherhood has an adrenaline-like effect. The sense of defensiveness heightens and it pushes the mother to do what she can to protect her children. In this case, Laura finds the strength to stand up not only for her daughter but for the Synths who depend on her as well.

Betrayal

Ivanno Jeremiah in Humans

AMC

Anatole returns to The Railyard with Stanley (Dino Fetscher) and Sam (Billy Jenkins). Max tries to expose him to the other Synths, telling them of his betrayal. However, the Synths eventually take Anatole’s side as he manages to turn them against Max. Thanks to Leo’s arrival, a guilty Stanley reactivates Max to help save Leo from Anatole. Max unleashes his true power on his former best friend, ending their friendship and his life for good.

Max has a pure soul. He is one of the series’ most human character. All of these change when he becomes the leader of the exiled Synths in The Railyard. Max was forced to take desperate measures. His people were dying, their supplies were limited, and the human-synth hate was at an all-time high. Laura’s short-lived victory showed him and the synths a glimmer of hope, but when Agnes’ (Holly Earl) suicide mission takes place, everything becomes worse than it was before.

Anatole’s betrayal must have hurt Max so hard. His most trusted counsel and his best friend led the attack against their only powerful human ally, Laura. When Anatole attacks Leo, he crossed the line. Max would never let anyone hurt his brother. Because of Stanley’s conflicted loyalty, Max came to Leo’s rescue and killed Anatole. The loss of a friend led to the rescue of a brother.

Reunited Once More

Emily Berrington in Humans

AMC

Niska receives help from Paul (Philip Barantini), the man she met at the bar. Paul brings her to a souvenir shop near the mountain where they find a dysfunctional Synth that came from there. The Synth kept repeating a message for Niska that either meant that she need not be afraid and go to the mountains or avoid it at all costs. It is where the cabin in Niska’s visions was, so she decided to push through with it,

While charging at Paul’s house, Niska has an image of a full moon. Coincidentally, the full moon showed that night. Because of this, Niska started her journey immediately. A few meters away from the cabin, she collapses since she did not charge fully. However, “The Synth Who Sleeps” went out of the cabin to greet her. To her surprise, the Synth was her old friend, Odi (Will Tudor). An unexpected twist, but a welcome one, nonetheless.

Now the Synths had more significant problems. Neha Patel (Thusita Jayasundera) may have helped release Mia, but Basswood had begun. Laura could not stop it, not even with Dr. Neil Sommers’ (Mark Bonnar) help. It was only a matter of time before the Synths faced attacks from everyone.

Humans continues next Tuesday, July 24th at 10/9c on AMC.
