‘Humans’ Season 3, Episode 6 Recap: The Rebellious Synths

Something is not quite right. While the Synths scored a small victory, you could not help but feel that this is the calm before the storm. Also, things are not what they always seem to be. A trusted friend could turn into your enemy anytime. Sometimes, it does not have to be your friend; it just has to be someone you trust. The peoples’ position regarding Synths is understandable. Still, feeling sorry for the Synths is not bad, either. Living in the Humans universe sounds complicated.

In this week’s episode of Humans, the Hawkins family face danger from all places as the Rebellious Synths press their attack. Meanwhile, Niska (Emily Berrington) follows a strange pattern she starts seeing. Amidst all the chaos, Mattie Hawkins (Lucy Carless) and Leo Elster (Colin Morgan) uncover a sad truth about Leo. Mattie hides a secret that could mean the end or the transitioning of their relationship to a different place.

Leo and Mattie’s Relationship

Leo and Mattie’s trip to Wales—where Leo’s childhood home is—did not end fruitless. Leo finds his father’s diary, the one that he kept seeing in his memories. As much as what Leo found out was painful, it helped him gain closure from his memories. Leo was starting to have a clear picture of his identity. Mattie helped him find meaning in his new life by disregarding what he saw. The fact is that Leo is alive, and that is all that mattered. Mattie’s revelation that evening perhaps made him rethink his standpoints permanently. Leo is going to be a father.

Leo and Mattie always seemed distant to what is going on. Even as they left Leo’s old house-turned-museum after a security warning, they seem nonchalant. They barely feared for their involvement in the conflict not until someone almost got arrested for Mattie’s actions. The appearance of Audrey Ballard (Yasmine Akram) could change this situation. She keeps following the two everywhere they go and is intent in piling up information that could potentially blow up on Mattie. Mattie might end up in the same situation as her mother.

Niska’s Relentlessness

Niska has always been on a lone mission ever since the start of this season. The bombing of the Human and Synth friendly bar sparked her determination in finding out who was responsible. Since then, her quest evolved into something more significant than what she imagined. “The Synth Who Sleeps” sent her a message. Whatever this Synth wants, Niska is up to the task of finding out the sudden interest this Synth has.

You would not dare go toe-to-toe with this badass. Despite the awakening, Niska’s stone-cold heartlessness gets the best of anyone who got in her way. The man who fooled her into thinking that he knew where “The Synth Who Sleeps” instantly regrets it when Niska managed to tase him. Oh, and she has no problems when it comes to letting herself free of her restraints. Tying her up on an operating table would not stop her. However, her presence there did not end with disappointment. The man she spoke to at the bar before her she got fooled tracked her down and offered to bring her to where “The Synth Who Sleeps” really is.

Mia’s Resilience

Mia (Gemma Chan) could easily be Laura’s Synth counterpart. In her life before the awakening, she served her then owners (the Hawkins family) well. After Day Zero, Mia has done nothing but advocate for peace between the People and the Synths, even after her betrayal at the hands of her ex-boyfriend as well as the anti-Synth protesters she woke up to on a daily basis.

Mia finishes telling the commission her experiences when Dr. Neil Sommers (Mark Bonnar) notices the explosion cloud. Also, she managed to convince Stanley not to kill Lord Dryden. As tensions grew, the police arrest Mia even though she did nothing wrong. However, Mia does not resist arrest. When the police took her away, she tells Laura to go home to her family. Without a word, she lets the police take her to a correctional facility. Hopefully, Mia finds allies during her time in prison, as far-fetched as that may sound.

Max’s Response

Max (Ivanno Jeremiah) is too late when he realizes what Anatole (Ukweli Roach) did. Not only did he set free the loose cannon known as Agnes (Holly Earl), he also doomed everyone at The Railyard. After Agnes’ suicide mission, Max’s priority was to close the gates. Thankfully, he did so without any intrusion. Max’s second priority was finding out why Anatole, his most trusted counsel, and his closest friend, betrayed him and his brothers and sisters.

Max’s disbelief over Anatole’s faith may have been stable before, but at this point, he does not know what to believe in anymore. He lashes out on Max’s altar to David Elster right after he talks to it. As he wrecked the place, he finds numerous improvised explosive devices in a hidden locker, primed and ready for deployment.

Laura’s Resolve

Everything that Laura worked on for the past episodes disappeared in a matter of minutes. As the Rebellious Synths wrecked havoc, the commission was not slow to act. When Agnes’ suicide bombing at the memorial of Day Zero happens, the commission immediately put Basswood into action. Not only does this undermine Laura’s efforts, but it also puts all the Green-eyed Synths at risk.

If there is any person that suffered the most, it has to be Laura Hawkins (Katherine Parkinson). Not only did she give up her marriage for lobbying for Synth rights; she also unwillingly put her family at risk once Stanley (Dino Fetscher) reveals his true colors. Although Stanley dragged her up to her room, Laura still chose to hold on to his compassion. Stanley was just a confused Synth who only knew lies. However, her decision to have Sam (Billy Jenkins) be killed instead of a random old man proved Anatole’s point. This one event may have shattered her sense of integrity forever.
