‘Humans’ Season 3, Episode 5 Recap: Displacement [SPOILERS]
BY Daniel Rayner
Published 6 years ago
The untimely death sparks an unexpected reunion. While most of the events that transpired bring the Synths a chance, the feeling of trouble stirring somewhere is unshakeable. Humans take the viewers to greater heights as unexpected alliances form. Also, two subplots present mysteries that would possibly affect the main plot significantly. You can never be so sure about yourself in this show.
In this week’s episode of Humans, Joe Hawkins (Tom Goodman-Hill) and Sam (Billy Jenkins) seek refuge after Karen Voss’ (Ruth Bradley) brutal murder. Meanwhile, the Dryden Commission approves an ordinance that gives Synths the protection they need. However, no matter how Max (Ivanno Jeremiah) sees this as a development in Human and Synth integration, the Rebellious Synths set out a plan of their own. Amid these events, the seemingly unaware couple, Leo Elster (Colin Morgan) and Mattie Hawkins (Lucy Carless) make progress in their lives, both inside and outside their relationship.
Protection
The Dryden Commission has a meeting during the evening to finalize what to do with the Anomalous Synths. It was quite late, so most of the members of the commission feel sleepy and are considerably impatient, so Lord Dryden (Matthew Marsh) decides to have the commission vote. They come upon the conclusion of setting a £300 fine to anyone who harms Synths. Laura immediately tells Mia (Gemma Chan) about this development.
Fallout
Laura comes home from her meeting with the Dryden Commission. Surprised, she finds her husband, Joe in her living room with a Synth Child named Sam. To explain, Joe tells Laura what happened to Sam’s mother, Karen. While it was untimely and it put her recently earned success in the commission at risk, she agrees to let Joe and Sam stay with them for the weekend. As Stanley (Dino Fetscher) leads Sam to a charging port, the former couple talk.
Shortly after this, the family discusses how they are going to deal with the situation. Sam’s existence needs to remain a secret. Also, Sophie Hawkins (Pixie Davies) skips school for the day. After the family meeting, Joe and Laura try to console Sam. They do not seem to get to Sam, so Sophie swoops in and invites Sam to play with her. Meanwhile, Mattie prepares to leave for school, leaving Leo behind. As the former couple watch news, the doorbell rings.
Joe opens the door, and he finds Dr. Neil Sommers (Mark Bonnar), asking for Laura. Laura proceeds to have a word with Neil privately, just outside the house. Neil apologizes to her for his behavior the other night, and he also wanted to celebrate Laura’s victory in the commission. Seeing Joe peeking through a window, Neil hands Laura the champagne bottle and leaves. Joe asks Stanley about Neil, but Stanley says that this information is restricted.
After playing hide and seek, Sophie and Sam do truth or dare. Their game becomes serious when Sam asks about death. Sophie’s answer made Sam think that he could find Karen’s body at the church. The next day, after the family goes about their usual business, Sam secretly walks out of the house to go to the nearest church. Joe and Laura realize that Sam is missing, so they look for him.
Sam approaches an old man who was visiting his dead wife. After a series of strange questions from Sam, the old man contacts Joe. Joe and Laura got tired of searching the entire block when they receive the call. They drive to the church immediately to pick up Sam. Joe approaches Sam, and they have a heart to heart talk before the left the church. When Sam comes home, he opens up to Sophie about what he feels about the loss of his mom.
Supporters
Mia receives some of her mail. One of them is missent to her, addressed to Professor Iris Tillson (Sheila Reid). Mia decides to deliver it to her. Iris thanks Mia and invites her to come inside her home. At first, Mia is skeptical, but when Iris introduces her to Dorian (Dominic Coleman), she is surprised. Mia finds out that she has numerous supporters, just like Iris. Also, thousands of Synths lived with humans in secret, just like Dorian. She concludes that the £300 fine was not enough. The Synths needed a voice in the commission.
Mia calls Laura to tell her what she realized. Laura suggests her to approach the Dryden Commission herself and have her voice heard. After the call, she walks out of her apartment to go to the commission’s office. At first, Mia walked by herself. However, after Laura told all of the journalists about what Mia was doing, peaceful, pro-Synth integration protesters gathered and walked with her.
As Mia stood outside the Dryden Commission’s office building, Lord Dryden calls Laura. Eventually, Mia’s actions reaped her expected reaction. Lord Dryden agrees to meet her with the commission the next day.
Identity
Upstairs, Sophie introduces Sam to ordinary things that children do. They build a fort together with a little help from Stanley. As they talk about games, Sam becomes interested in playing hide and seek. Before hiding in Mattie’s closet, Sam explains that he is playing with Sophie to Leo. After Sophie left the room and went looking for Sam somewhere else, Leo approaches Sam. Suddenly, Leo jogs his memory a bit as he had visions of hiding in his father’s closet while he was working.
A New Friend
While Mattie works on her assignment in the Computer Laboratory, a young lady approaches her, introducing herself as Audrey Ballard. After an awkward small talk, Audrey and Mattie become friends. She receives Mattie’s help in her assignment. The duo becomes closer to each other as they spent the succeeding days in school together.
Audrey requests Mattie to have her print something for her. While Mattie was talking to the attendant, Audrey secretly copied Mattie’s files to her flash drive. That evening, Leo tells Mattie about his recent memory. Mattie agrees to accompany him to his old house. Also, she mentions that she made a new friend. Elsewhere, Audrey talks to someone unknown while browsing through Mattie’s files. She asks whoever it is that she is talking with to give her more time to gather enough information about Mattie.
Open The Gates
The Synths gather to hear news about the £300 fine set for anyone who harms a Synth. Max happily accepts this news, and he immediately orders the gates to open. While Anatole (Ukweli Roach) asks him to reconsider, Max insists that it was the right time to do so. Shortly after the opening, the first batch of Synths leaves The Railyard freely.
More Synths left The Railyard when Anatole approaches the gates. Max expresses how vital Anatole is to him, both for his friendship and his counsel. As Max left him to send off more of the Synths, Anatole decides to free Agnes (Holly Earl). The darkness was no place for her. When no one else is around, Anatole sends Agnes off. Anatole calls Stanley, giving him orders he needed to carry out the next day. Laura suddenly wakes up, telling Stanley that she could not sleep. The next day is going to be eventful, but not in the way that Laura expects it to be.
Humans continues next Tuesday, July 10th at 10/9c on AMC.
