‘Humans’ Season 3, Episode 4 Recap: Human Relations [SPOILERS]

You win a few; you lose a few. This episode of Humans exemplifies this reality that we face daily. It brings about a positive vibe that proves humanity’s willingness and open-mindedness. It also presents the harsh reality of suffering the consequences brought about by regrettable actions. A mystery presents itself. As the protagonists lead their separate lives, a common problem binds them.

In episode 4 of Humans, the Dryden commission visits The Railyard. Meanwhile, Niska (Emily Berrington) tracks down the Synth who is responsible for the bombing as she stumbles upon a greater mystery. Elsewhere, Mia (Gemma Chan) deals with her past as she reunites with Ed (Sam Palladio). As Mattie Hawkins (Lucy Carless) and Leo Elster (Colin Morgan) put an effort to prevent an innocent man from being imprisoned, Joe Hawkin’s (Tom Goodman-Hill) fantastic night with Karen Voss (Ruth Bradley) and Sam (Billy Jenkins) ends tragically.

The Visit

Agnes (Holly Earl) volunteers to meet with the commission alongside Max (Ivanno Jeremiah). After she tells Max her story before the events during The Awakening, Max declines her offer, saying that her age is of concern as well as her recent behavior. She insists on meeting the commission, so Max locks her up inside the medical facility.

AMC

Max welcomes the Dryden commission in The Railyard. He respectfully requests them to leave their Orange-eyed Synths outside and have their armed policemen guard them instead. The Green-eyed Synths find it offensive to see their enslaved brothers and sisters in the same room as them. After exchanging formalities, Max begins the tour.

Max brings the commission in the workshop where some Synths construct solar panels. This was due to the regular power outages inside The Railyard, causing the deaths of some of their brothers and sisters. He humors the commission when asked about the functionality of the panels. As Max jokes about British weather, the members of the commission laugh.

When Max brings the commission into the projection room, he sees Agnes. She was holding a knife and was aiming to kill Lord Dryden (Matthew Marsh). Anatole (Ukweli Roach) prevents her from coming any closer to Lord Dryden and promptly takes her away from the projection room. After the commission left, Max decides to deal with Agnes personally.

AMC

Agnes remains firm in her stand against the humans. She says that their deaths would have caused other Synths to take arms and rebel against the Humans. Max tells her that this is not the way that they were to achieve peace and that the Synths who lived with them did not desire death. Agnes blames him for the loss of Flash (Ritu Arya) as well as the deaths of their brothers and sisters. Max had enough of Agnes’ endless arguing, so he imprisons her in a shipment container.

Work Relationships

As the commission left The Railyard, Laura Hawkins (Katherine Parkinsons) asks Dr. Neil Sommers (Mark Bonnar) out on a second date to celebrate the outcome of the visit. Neil offers to cook them dinner at his house instead, so Laura agrees. When they arrive at his house, Neil compliments Laura for seeing the Synths’ humanity before any of them did. After this, they start to kiss passionately.

After they made love, Laura approaches Neil who was smoking outside. The weather was chilly, so she tells Neil to enter the house instead. However, Neil mentions that he has an early meeting the next day, so he asks Laura to leave. Puzzled, she says goodbye. As Laura left Neil’s house, she starts to cry.

Innocence

Mattie tells her sister, Sophie Hawkins (Pixie Davies) to get herself ready for school. Toby Hawkins (Theo Stevenson) requests her to drive Sophie to school. When Mattie declines, he starts to rant about how he would not have to bring Sophie to her school which was at their dad’s village but then stops himself when he realized that Leo was sitting at the dining table. Toby leaves shortly after.

While Mattie was taking a bath, Leo comes across her laptop on her bed. He checks the news, and he finds out that an innocent man was arrested and accused of releasing the code that sparked The Awakening. Mattie sees the report as well, and she starts blaming herself for what happened. Leo calms her down and says that none o it was her fault. As he went down to make them tea, Mattie rushes to the car to surrender to the police. Leo manages to catch up to her and enter the vehicle.

When they arrive at the Police Station, Leo asks Mattie to reconsider her decision. He offers to turn himself in instead of her, but she declines his offer. Leo expresses his disdain for Mattie’s idea, too, so he comes up with a plan to keep anyone from being arrested. They drive to an empty lot. Mattie encrypts the code which would enable people to track the source and see that it originated from London, but would mask the identity of the author. After weighing her options, Mattie releases the encrypted code.

The Synth who Sleeps

Niska enters the location given to her by the Orange-eyed Synth. She finds no one there. As Niska continued to explore, a Synth deactivates her. When she wakes up, she comes face to face with the Synth who was responsible for the bombing. When he reveals that he was going to kill her and frame her for the attack, she regains her motor functions and kills the synth.

Niska disguises herself as an Orange-eyed synth when she visits her lover, Astrid (Bella Dayne). She tells Astrid of her exploits. When Niska mentions the mysterious synth which was known as the one who sleeps, Astrid points out the possibility of this mystery to be something extraordinary.

The Past

Mia exits her flat and becomes surrounded by angry protesters. She falls and she reaches her hand out. Ed grabs her hand and helps her up. As Mia and Ed went back into her apartment, she punches him. When Ed wakes up, he apologizes to Mia for what he did to her in the past. He tells Mia about the death of his grandmother. Ed gives Mia his grandmother’s necklace. When he stands up to leave, Mia makes him stay, saying that he needed ice for his bruise.

After the swelling on his bruise subsides, Ed offers Mia to leave with him and live at the beach. He knew that Mia wanted the comfort of their life there. Mia does not reply. Instead, she kisses Ed. Ed tells her many things about the beach as he put his clothes back on. However, Mia tells him that she would not join him and that she had to finish what she started. Before he left, Ed tells Mia that she knew where to find him if she changes her mind.

Motherhood

Joe calls Toby, asking if he and Sophie could go with him to the recently opened golf park at his village. Toby declines, saying that he had a meeting with his career advisers and that Sophie was at Karate training. Joe ends the call. He decides to invite Karen and Sam instead. Sam agreed instantly, and while Karen was skeptical at first, she eventually decides to go with Joe.

Sam enjoys playing golf while Karen and Joe talk about their previous lives. Later that night, Joe drops them off. Sam trips and a man notices blue blood running out of his hand. Karen covers Sam and tells him to run as she distracted the people with her hand, revealing that she was the Synth. Sam runs to Joe and tells him what happened, so Joe and Sam drive back to the town. Joe cries as he finds Karen’s lifeless body in a pool of blue blood.

Humans continues next Tuesday, July 3rd at 10/9c on AMC.
