In this week’s episode of Humans, The Synths deal with the fallout from the sudden Police Raid and Max (Ivanno Jeremiah) faces a life and death decision that would change his leadership capabilities permanently. Mattie Hawkins (Lucy Carless) stays by Leo Elster’s (Colin Morgan) bedside, and as he makes a surprising recovery, he loses something else. Mia (Gemma Chan) and Niska (Emily Berrington) head out of The Railyard, each on two different missions. Laura Hawkins (Katherine Parkinson) discovers a threat that could mean the eradication of Synth lives. Meanwhile, Joe Hawkins (Tom Goodman-Hill) makes an unexpected discovery in the Synth-free village of Waltringham.
The Dryden Commission
Laura and Toby Hawkins (Theo Stevenson) have breakfast. She talks to him, telling him to open up to her if anyone harms him because of her line of work. Since classes were canceled due to the bombing, Toby announces that he is going to his father, Joe’s shop to help him out. The doorbell rings, and when Laura opens it, she meets Stanley (Dino Fetscher). She calls her client, Neha Patel (Thusita Jayasundera) and tells her that she does not want to have Stanley, but Neha insisted that it was part of her new job in the Dryden commission. Eventually, she lets Stanley enter the house. Toby is amazed at Stanley’s new features, something that the previous “Green-eyed” models had. Sophie Hawkins (Pixie Davies) meets Stanley and smiles at him.
Laura lets Stanley drive her to her new job at the Dryden commission. Outside, angry protesters gather around the entrance. Laura uses the restroom and meets Dr. Neil Sommer, a behavioral scientist who is also part of the commission.
The meeting starts. Lord Dryden (Matthew Marsh) gives a short description of the situation regarding the Synths then he asks the panel what they are to do with the Synths in their country for good. Steve Codell (Neil D’Souza) presents the benefits of the National Curfew Program, and he insists that it should be extended. Laura argues that this solution was bad for the children since they witness Synths being beaten to death by the side of the road as this program did not cover them, so they should grant the “Green Eyes” emergency basic rights as well as protection. Dr. Sommer supports her proposition by stating research statistics his team had found that support Laura’s claim. Steve disregards all of this, saying that they should bring the Basewood program back into consideration.
At the end of the meeting, Laura thanks Dr. Sommer for his support. They have a short conversation. Dr. Sommer avoids the question about Basewood. When he leaves, Laura asks Stanley about Dr. Sommer’s behavior; then he confirms that Dr. Sommer was lying. Because of this, Laura decides to ask Dr. Sommer out for dinner.
Laura comes home, checking on her children. After she opens the refrigerator, she asks Stanley to do the online shopping for their necessities. Laura notices that Sophie is upset, so she talks to her. Sophie was uninvited to her friend, Carly’s birthday party because of Laura’s line of work. Laura decides to bring her children out to have lunch with her in a restaurant.
While they talk about each other’s day, Sophie asks Laura to have Stanley sit with them. As Sophie and Toby talk to Stanley, one of the customers yell at Laura. She becomes hostile when she throws a bottle at them which Stanley promptly catches. After this, they leave the restaurant.
Waltringham
Toby receives final instructions from Joe as they get ready to open the shop. They talk about their separate lives and then Joe’s sense of fulfillment ever since he started working there at his shop compared to his old job where he barely spoke to anyone at all. He may earn comparably little to his previous salary, but he insists that at the end of each day, he feels connected. A customer enters, so Toby approaches her.
Karen Voss (Ruth Bradly) sends Seraph Sam (Billy Jenkins) to school. She is delighted to see that Sam has made friends in his new school. At the end of the day, Sam tells Karen about her day at school. Joe watches them pass by him as he offloads some of his goods out of his van. Joe decides to follow Karen and Sam. When Karen stops him, he threatens to blow their cover; then Sam shows up. Karen invites him over to their house.
Joe asks Karen who he is and what they are doing here. Karen tells Sam that Joe is a friend. Sam then introduces himself to him. Karen tells him the story behind how she ended up with Sam. She insists that staying in Waltringham would keep them away from harm. She also tells him that she is training Sam to pass as a human. Joe gives them a chance then he leaves them.
Missions
Mia arrives back to The Railyard. When Gordon (Staz Nair) opens the gate, he tells Mia that the police raided them. She finds Max in Leo’s room. Mia notices that Leo was breathing unaided, then she finds out about what Max had to do. Niska enters the communications room. Tristan (Phil Dunster) tells her to get off the machine, but Niska insists that Max authorized her.
Max, Mia, Anatole, and Tristan arrive in the communications room. Max questions what Niska is doing, and she simply replies that she was scanning the police frequencies. It turns out that Niska had received a transmission from some of the Synths who had survived their trip to the South Coast. Mia decides to rescue the four Synths who have sent the transmission. Max disagrees with her, but Mia reasons that they could fail anywhere else, but they must never fail their own kind. Niska goes with her.
As Niska waits for Mia at the gate, Anatole talks to her. He mentions how their existence was something pre-ordained. Niska finds this idea absurd. Mia and Niska steal a van to get to the location. Mia expresses her concern over what they were doing, but Niska tells her not to worry about it. Mia asks Niska what her true intentions are and she finds out that Niska is after the Synths responsible for the bombing. She thinks that the stranded Synths know something about the aggressive Synths then she has Mia wear shades since her eyes would attract attention.
On the way to the location, Niska calls Astrid (Bella Dayne) through a cell phone. She checks on Astrid’s condition and tells her that when the police talks to her, she should tell them that Niska held her hostage. Also, she tells her that she is looking for the Synths responsible for the bombing. Mia asks her about her experience living with the humans, and she replies that it was nice, but she could not keep herself from thinking about the end. Mia then tells her that they were unable to reconstruct the consciousness code and that they had no more ideas as to what has to be done. They may have failed in all their other attempts, but she would not fail the Synths today, at least.
When they arrive at the beach, all they find are bodies of Synths. Mia detects the signatures of the four surviving Synths inside a cabin, so they proceed to go there. The four of them reveal themselves to Mia and Niska once they hear Mia. However, they hear police sirens outside, so they hide once more. Mia comes up with a plan to drive the police away.
She exits the cabin, posing as a scavenger. She tells the policeman that the live Synths have already left the scene not too long ago, so the policemen decide to chase after them. They also order Mia to leave the beach. Once the sound of the police car starts, the surviving Synths tell Niska about what was happening in their country of origin. She asks them if they knew anything related to the Synths who were responsible for the bombing. One of the survivors gives her a location. Mia then opens the door, saying that it was time to leave.
As Mia and Niska refill the van’s gas tank, Niska tells her that she is going to find the bomber in London. Mia tells her to be careful. Before she left, she asks Niska about what she could do to change their situation. Niska tells her that hiding in The Railyard would not make any difference to their lives. She mentions that she had tried to live with a human, but she was betrayed. Niska insists that she should not let this experience define her and that she would find a way.
The Leader
Max tries to negotiate with Agnes (Holly Earl), telling her to get back down on her knees. As the police officers countdown, he decides to stand up and push Agnes down, then he approaches Ferdinand, also telling him to go back on his knees. When he does, Max does the same thing, announcing their full cooperation. Inside the medical facility, Niska hides, holding a screwdriver as a weapon. The policemen outside order her to come out. In the room beside it, Mattie continues to attempt to revive Leo.
The policemen enter the medical facility. One of them checks their SynthScan, which shows that there was only one Synth in the room. Niska hid under the operating table where the unconscious Synth was placed on. The commanding officer of the policemen receive new orders, so they proceed to pull out of The Railyard. Just as the policemen were about to uncover the unconscious Synth then possibly find Niska, they receive the new orders, so they leave the medical facility. Niska helps Mattie stabilize Leo. Max and Anatole watch the policemen leave in their vehicles. The power comes back, so they head to Leo’s room. Niska tells them that he is in stable condition.
Max and Mia argue about Max’s decision to let Leo off the ventilator. Mia understands his actions; then she decides to forgive him, telling him that what matters was that Leo was alive and well. Anatole and Tristan arrive in the room, telling them about the emergency contact he received on their encrypted channel, so they proceed to the communications room. They talk about what to do with the transmission they received then Max lets them go to the stranded Synths after Anatole convinces him to let Mia and Niska do so.
Anatole tells Max about Leo’s surprising recovery. They are interrupted by Agnes who demands an explanation about Mattie’s presence in The Railyard. Max responds by saying that it was none of their concern and that she is under his protection, then Agnes mentions how Flash and Julian were also under his protection. She says that they require an explanation for all that is happening and that Max has done nothing but tell them that the Humans would accept them. Max says that he would consider her request, but she reiterates that it is a demand by giving him a deadline.
Agnes confronts Max in the medical facility. She asks him about the locked door. Max changes the subject of their conversation by talking about the day Agnes arrived in The Railyard and how she has changed. When Max asks the reason behind her rage, she reasons out that Max has not been doing anything as their people died. He then asks Agnes what she would do differently if she were the leader, then he repels each of her arguments. Before Agnes leaves Max, she looks at the locked door, telling him that if he would not open it, they would.
Recovery
Leo suddenly wakes up from his coma. He has vivid flashbacks of what had happened to him before his being in a coma. Anatole checks on Leo. Leo tried to get up but was too weak. However, Anatole notes that he is considerably strong especially since he was in a coma for a year. When Leo asks Mattie what has happened, Anatole leaves the room. Mattie and Leo talk about how he has trouble remembering what had happened to him before the accident. Mac enters the room and says that it is unsafe for them to stay in The Railyard. At that same day, Max found a vehicle to put Mattie and Leo on. Leo tries to shake Max’s hand, but Max simply lets the vehicle leave. The gate closes.
Humans continues next Tuesday, June 19th at 10/9c on AMC.
