It was back in 2010 when audiences first watched Toothless and Hiccup become the best of friends in How to Train Your Dragon, and with their story ending with The Hidden World back in 2019, word has it that Universal Pictures is finding a way to bring the dragons of Berk back to the big screen.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman (via The Direct), HTTYD director Dean Deblois has been hired by Universal to develop a live-action treatment for the franchise. We don’t have any story details for this new How to Train Your Dragon project, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it brought back Hiccup and Toothless for live-action.
If anything, the timeline of the story has moved forward, taking place 1300 years after Hiccup’s time in the spinoff series Dragons: The Nine Realms on Peacock. I’ll admit, it’s a completely different genre than Vikings on dragons, but I guess that’s where things could change for the upcoming property.
With the animated How to Train Your Dragon as great as it is, I would love for the live-action movie to just expand on the lore, maybe even follow an adult Hiccup who is reunited with Toothless for one more ride. Then again, maybe they can pull a Reign of Fire story and have modern day people discovering dragons and trying to harness their power. I just know it has to be different from how House of the Dragon is doing things.
A live-action How to Train Your Dragon hasn’t been officially announced, but you can catch Dragons: The Nine Realms now on Peacock.
