[UPDATED] The Heartbreakers' Frontman Tom Petty Condition Unclear After Being Hospitalized

UPDATE: Rock legend and singer-songwriter Tom Petty died Monday after suffering from cardiac arrest. He was 66. Petty passed away at 11:30 PM, surrounded by his loved ones and bandmates. Tony Dimitiriades, Petty’s manager, confirmed the news to CNN.
ORIGINAL STORY: After being found unconscious, Petty was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica Hospital Sunday night. Conflicting stories about his condition have been circulating, but as of this writing, the Heartbreakers’ frontman is currently “clinging to life” according to an update from TMZ.

Tom Petty’s condition still unclear

According to law enforcement sources, Petty suffered a full cardiac arrest, which rendered him unconscious and not breathing. The singer-songwriter is currently on life support, and his condition is still critical. A few hours ago, the Los Angeles Police Department tweeted out that Petty has died at the age of 66, which was shortly redacted and replaced with a statement saying: “The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty. Initial information was inadvertantly provided to some media sources. However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting.”
Earlier today, TMZ’s sources say that a chaplain was “called to Tom’s hospital room.” Petty’s family reportedly has a “do not resuscitate” order on the rock singer. It’s unclear if Petty will be able to make it through, but he is still “clinging on to life.”
Widespread reports say that he has died, but the legendary rock singer’s condition at the moment is currently unknown.

Petty’s rock band rose to prominence in the early 70’s with his band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. AMong their smash hits include “American Girl,” “Free Fallin’,”Breakdown,” and “Listen to Her Heart.” On April 28, 1999, the band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for their amazing contributions to the rock music industry. In 2002, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The band officially debuted in 1976 and has been performing since then. Petty’s latest show was last Monday at the Hollywood Bowl—the conclusion of their 40th-anniversary tour. In December last year, Petty told Rolling Stone in an interview that this tour might be the band’s last. “It’s very likely we’ll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don’t think so. I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was thinking this might be the last big one,” Petty said. “We’re all on the backside of our sixties. I have a granddaughter now I’d like to see as much as I can. I don’t want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that’s a lot of time.”
