We may have to wait until 2025 to see the sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but we’ll be returning to Gotham a lot sooner with the upcoming Penguin spinoff starring Colin Farrell. Just in, HBO has dropped a featurette teasing the series in production, and it teases Oz Cobblepot’s criminal rise to power.
Check this out:
We don’t have an official synopsis for the series yet, but the teaser does give us an idea of where Oz’s story pick up, especially after the events of The Batman. We see the power vacuum take effect as criminals vie for control over the city, and it looks like Cobblepot isn’t someone who’s really on top, despite being the henchman of Carmine Falcone.
Though the comics often portrays Cobblepot as a ruthless mob boss, it’s kind of interesting to see him evolve; and we see that he’s kind of stuck doing a lot of the leg work for the mob. The Batman proves that Cobblepot isn’t an idiot, so it’s going to be interesting how he’s going to work his way up in the series. My guess is by the time The Batman sequel rolls in, the Penguin will be pretty high up in the mob hierarchy. I don’t expect him to be at the top, but he could be the one who takes over Falcone’s role in Gotham.
I’m just crossing my fingers that we see more villains in the Batman rogues gallery running around Gotham as well. I wouldn’t even mind of Robert Pattinson doesn’t show up (but he probably will).
The Penguin premieres on HBO Max sometime in 2024.
