Disney+ may not have gotten the reception they wanted for Pinocchio, but they have their eye on the prize with the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.
D23 Expo 2022 just dropped the new teaser, and we have Halle Bailey as the princess who kicked off the Disney Renaissance. Watch this:
Here’s the official description:
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
While Bailey is more of a new face when it comes to the big screen, she is joined by a star-studded cast for The Little Mermaid including Javier Bardem as King Triton, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and Jacob Tremblay as Flounder. Ariel’s love interest Prince Eric is also played by Jonah Hauer-King.
Probably the other biggest star of this movie is Ursula, and she’s going to be brought to life by Melissa McCarthy. Though there was a call for Ursula to be played by a Drag performer, I guess Disney isn’t quite ready to make that step without the film getting banned in Russia and China.
We don’t have a look at more of the movie yet, but hopefully we get something around Christmas. The Little Mermaid swims into cinemas on May 26, 2023.
