Guillermo del Toro may have brought together several filmmakers for Cabinet of Curiosities, but the auteur director is set to take the helm for his first animated film—a take on the classic tale of Pinocchio.
The film is set to come out on Netflix in December, but before that, the film is actually set to hit cinemas this week. To mark the premiere, we have a new trailer for del Toro’s Pinocchio. Watch this:
Though everyone is pretty familiar with Disney’s take on the boy puppet story, del Toro promises that his version of the character will tackle more adult themes like fascism and existentialism.
Not to mention, the movie has a completely different visual style, not only with Pinocchio, but with the rest of the characters. This is the first time I we actually get a good look at the ‘Blue Fairy’ creature in this film, and it looks like something that jumped right out of Pan’s Labyrinth, complete with multiple eyes at the horns.
Here’s the official movie description:
Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio comes to theaters on Nov. 9 and releases on Netflix a month later on Dec. 9.
