Grimm EPs David Greenwalt & Jim Kouf Tease Show's Upcoming Second Season

What can fans expect from Grimm’s upcoming second season? ‘A whole lotta bad critters coming for Nick,’ according to Grimm producers/writers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, who sat down to a conference call with ScreenSpy and assembled Press last week to tease the show’s upcoming second season.

Season one cliffhangered with Juliette in a coma, Hank on the verge of a mental breakdown, Monroe and Rosalee getting cozy, and Nick’s mother, returned from the grave, very much alive and well. Fans aren’t the only ones clamoring for answers. “Boy, does [Nick] have a lot of questions he wants answered,” said David Greenwalt. On the subject of the return of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio’s Kelly Burkhardt, he added,  “She’s been on a long quest and they have lots of issues to work out. One with the other. Nick is growing into his own and part of that is learning more about his past from his mother and coming to grips with a lot of the emotional things that have happened to him. The second season, it is going to be him coming into his own, but he’s going to be challenged on so many levels.

Greenwalt and Kouf Tease Grimm’s Dark Mythology

But Nick isn’t the only one clashing with his mother, apparently. “In the first episode, you’ll see a clash between Monroe and the mom,” says Greenwalt.  “And Monroe is like, ‘Who is this insane person?’ And Nick is like, ‘Well it happens to be my mom.’ And so you’ve got all kinds of conflict going on and the mom does not approve – you know, fraternizing with the Wesen so to speak.

Apart from the Mommy issues, Nick will face some bigger and badder creatures this season too, one of whom will make his life a living hell. “In the first episode Nick is going to face something unlike anything he has ever faced before,” teases Greenwalt. “It will be bigger, and badder, and more dangerous, and more vicious. There’s something called a Mauvais Dents. Which is our version, that means actually bad teeth, and it’s a sabre-tooth tiger kind of creature.

The Mauvais Dents, set to recur over the first two episodes of the season, and played by Stargate alum Mike Dopud, is a particular kind of threat, with a couple of noteworthy features.

One is that he’s just a killing machine and to be feared,” says Greenwalt. “He could take out a whole village. And two, animals or critters, or creatures that are extinct in our world are not necessarily extinct in the Wesen world. But this is a very rare creature that requires a lot of support and backing to get him thrust into Nick’s life and making Nick’s life a living hell.

But Nick is not the only one whose life is about to take a turn for the worse this season. Hank (Russell Hornsby) is still struggling to come to terms with all he has seen, and the first three episodes will see him going through a lot.

Oh, he’s got some real issues coming up in the first three episodes,” says Kouf, with a laugh.

Yeah,” adds Greenwalt. “He’s seen some stuff that he can’t explain and it’s going to start throwing him into quite a tizzy.”

Capain Reynard (Sasha Roiz) too will see some suffering – In Kouf’s own words. “You’re going to get a lot about Renard really early on,” he promises.

Yeah,” says Greenwalt. “There’s going to be some big questions answered and some new problems posed. And he too is going to be faced with a lot of conflict. I think it will be even bigger and better in season two if we do say so ourselves.

If we don’t screw it up,” Kouf chimes in.

So exactly what sort of ‘bad critters’ will be slithering their way towards Portland this season? Greenwalt and Kouf share some intriguing titles and images with the Press including Ceiling Guterd – which we are told are actually sheep-like and good natured people, a Nuclea Veve, which is mythological horse-like creature except with translucent skin who’s definitely coming after Nick, and more Blutbads. “Oh and a spitting cobra,” adds Greenwalt. “You know, bigger and badder creatures this year!

Will all the action leave any room for romance? With the upping of Guest Star Bree Turner to series regular, there are fans who hope to see a budding romance between Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) and Rosalee. Will they be disappointed? Yes and no, it seems.

Monroe’s going to have some romantic complications with his relationship with Rosalee, because of his past,” explains Greenwalt. “Monroe is going to be faced with some issues from his past that are going to come up. He’s also going to be faced with some life and death issues because of his relationship with Nick, that he refuses to give up.

And as for Juliette?

Who knows what’s going to happen to Juliette,” says Greenwalt cryptically.

She’s got a lot to deal with,” says Kouf.

She’s got a lot to deal with should she ever come out of that coma,” teases Greenwalt.

Don’t miss the season two premiere of Grimm, Monday August 13 (10-11 p.m. ET) on NBC.
