Greta Thunberg, the 17-year-old climate activist whose campaign has gained international recognition, will be getting her own documentary TV series with BBC.
The studio announced the news at its Showcase event in Liverpool. No broadcaster has yet come on board to the series. And the title and number of episodes are yet to be determined.
According to Deadline, the documentary series will be made by BBC’s science unit. As the official logline goes, “The series will follow Greta’s international crusade which takes her to the front line of climate change in some of the most extraordinary places on Earth as she explores what actions could be taken to limit climate change and the damage it does. As she travels Greta meets not only leading scientists but political leaders and business heavyweights, exploring the scientific evidence with them and challenging them to change.”
In addition to her journey for climate change, the series will also explore her journey to adulthood. It will showcase the quiet moments as she writes the impactful speeches that have shaken up the world. And it will unveil her life as a teenager like no other facing down the world consequences of inaction.
“Climate change is probably the most important issue of our lives so it feels timely to make an authoritative series that explores the facts and science behind this complex subject,” said Rob Liddell, the executive producer of the series, in a statement. “To be able to do this with Greta is an extraordinary privilege, getting an inside view on what it’s like being a global icon and one of the most famous faces on the planet.”
Greta Thunberg was introduced to the world in 2018 after she organized an international school strike against climate change. This movement is variously known as Fridays for Future, Youth for Climate, Climate Strike or Youth Strike for Climate. This boosted her to global recognition and allowed her to address the United Nations. In 2019, she has been named the Time person of the year and was nominated for the Nobel peace prize.
In addition to her BBC series, Greta Thunberg is also set to appear in the Hulu documentary titled Greta. The documentary is set to premiere in 2020. It follows Thunberg from her early days in her school strike in 2018 all the way to global fame and huge international protests. It is produced by B-Reel Films.
