'Gotham' Season 4 Midseason Premiere: Key Villains Returning, 3 Things You Need To Know

So far, according to a list by The Wrap, there have been around 40 villains in FOX’s “Gotham” since season 1. From Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) to Firefly (Michelle Veintimilla), each one has given the audience different kinds of feelings.
The first half of “Gotham” season four showed the rise and falls, deaths, and resurrections of villains. Butch Gilzean (Drew Powell) gets thrown into the Slaughter Swamp and comes out as Solomon Grundy. Ra’s Al Gul (Alexander Siddig) died in the reluctant hands of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz). Professor Pyg (Michael Cerveris) killed dirty cops and went on a cannibalistic rampage, albeit poetic to the people. Carmine Falcone (John Doman) comes back to the city but dies from gunshots in front of his Gotham manor. Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) escapes Oswald Cobblepot’s (Robin Taylor) ice trap with the help of a crazed “fan.” Sofia Falcone’s (Crystal Reed) true intentions in Gotham are also discovered. She wanted to avenge her brother’s death through manipulation and death.
Now that the “Gotham” midseason premiere is just around the corner, what does the show have in store for us? Here are three things you need to know before the premiere.
Jim Gordon is the captain of the GCPD
After Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) left the department, Jim signed the captain’s contract. He gets the whole department to side with him in becoming good cops and stopping crime—for real this time. By the end of the first half of the season, Harvey is seen coming out of Jim’s office. Everyone might have been expecting tension since Jim did get his old partner’s job. Harvey says he dropped something off—his badge and gun on his desk. This resignation from Harvey, no doubt, makes Jim Gordon the captain of the Gotham City Police Department.
Gotham gets a new Poison Ivy (again)
Since season 1, there have been two actresses who played Poison Ivy. First, Clare Foley portrayed the red-headed villain as a troubled child. Then in season three, Maggie Geha took the role in a different direction as someone older who uses her sex appeal to manipulate people.
In October 2017, Peyton List was cast as the new Poison Ivy. According to Warner Bros., the switch is part of the character’s transformation to the seductress everyone knows and loves. In a report by Entertainment Weekly, “Gotham” producers said, “in the continuing evolution of Poison Ivy’s origin story, Ivy Pepper has been transformed once again taking another step toward becoming the Ivy we know from the comics.”
Jerome and Oswald: From cell neighbors to best buddies
For the first half of the season, Jerome Valeska went missing and had since been spending some alone time in Arkham Asylum. However, in the midseason finale, he gets a friend when Oswald, aka Penguin, gets thrown into the cell beside him. Oswald starts ranting about Sofia, Jim, and Victor, Jerome calls out to Oswald, saying they can help each other. Oswald is shocked when he hears him laugh, recognizing the sound. They both burst out in maniacal laughter after Jerome offered Oswald to be his best friend. Could this be a budding Oswald and Jerome friendship?
“Gotham” returns Thursday, March 1st with “Pieces of a Broken Mirror” at 8/9c on FOX.
