Good Morning Call Season 1 Episode 9 Recap – A Valentine Surprise

Even after hearing Uehara tell Yuri he likes Nao, Nao still can’t believe it. She remains on the floor, processing what she just heard. Uehara reminds her that she’s about to be late for school then he leaves her behind. At school, Nao finally tells Marina that Uehara admitted he likes her. Marina is very happy for her friend, then Nao tells her that she hasn’t confessed to Uehara yet. Marina is about to scold her friend, then she realizes that if Nao hasn’t confessed yet then it only means that Uehara thinks it’s a one-sided love. 

Inside the classroom, Nao reviews for the test using the reviewer that Daichi gave her. She looks out the window and sees Daichi playing with other students. She tells herself that she will do well on her exams. After taking the test, she goes to Uehara’s room and hands him the lunch she prepared. Just like how she is with Daichi, she now feels awkward around Uehara. She tells him to eat alone since she has to talk to Marina. Uehara notices this and tells Nao that there is no use in avoiding him since they live together.

Nao and Marina eat lunch together. Marina tells Nao that she should plan to do something with Uehara for Valentine’s Day. She even tells Nao to go out on a date with him. Nao immediately imagines what a date with Uehara could be like. She asks Marina if she could stay over at her place on the 13th so she could prepare the cake that she will give to Uehara.

Later that night, Nao asks Uehara what he will do on the 14th. He looks like he doesn’t even know it’s Valentine’s Day. He tells Nao that he will be working, but he doesn’t have anything to do in the morning. Nao gets so excited and asks him to go with her somewhere. Uehara just says yes to Nao without arguing. Nao teases him that he must be getting a lot of chocolate from women every Valentine’s Day. Uehara tells him he gets nothing because if he receives any gift from the girls they would want something in return. Nao can hardly imagine Uehara not getting anything on Valentine’s Day when he admits that he accepted a cake from Yuri before.

At school, they see Daichi and greet him. Daichi tells Marina and Nao to watch him play on Sunday since it will be their last game. Marina tells him that since it’s Valentine’s Day they have other plans. Marina does most of the talking until Daichi tells them goodbye. Marina tells her friend to just act normal around Daichi, and not to worry about him. On his way back to class, Daichi sees Uehara. Uehara tells him that he finally confessed to Nao.

After school, Marina and Nao start preparing for Valentine’s Day. They bake a cake and Nao even tries some dresses on. Marina can’t seem to be satisfied with Nao’s choice of clothing so she keeps saying no. Marina tells Nao that she doesn’t have to be mature like Yuri because Uehara already likes her just the way she is. This calms Nao down for a bit, then she panics once more when Marina asks her if she gained weight.

Nao lets Uehara eat all the food at lunch. She is worried about her weight because of what Marina said. She tells Uehara to meet her at 9 am on Sunday. Uehara just laughs and asks her why they have to meet when they live in the same house. Nao says she will be staying over at Marina’s on the 13th anyway.

Inside the ramen shop, Issei prepares the free food for Nao. Nao says she will not be eating that day. Just after Nao says no to Issei, her stomach growls. She admits that she is getting a little chubbier because she keeps eating the chocolate cakes they’ve been preparing. Abe who is at the ramen shop asks Nao if she will give him some. Issei asks the same thing. Nao apologizes and tells them she decided to give one to only one person. Issei tells Nao to eat the food regardless of whatever reason she has because it’s store policy. He tells her that he likes a woman who enjoys eating and is a little chubby.

Yuri visits the house and brings them a cake. She hands Nao a dress and tells her it’s a gift. Uehara worries about her and asks if she and Takuya have been fighting again. Yuri tells them there’s nothing wrong. After giving them the gift, Uehara notices that Yuri has left her gloves behind. He runs after her and sees that she looks sad.

On the 13th, Nao is having a sleepover at Marina’s. She tells Marina her worries about Yuri and Uehara. Marina tells her friend not to worry about anything since Uehara already admitted to Nao and Yuri that he likes Nao. 

At the coffee shop, Uehara says goodbye to the last customers. Nanako walks in and hands Uehara a gift for Valentine’s Day. Uehara tells her that he doesn’t accept any gifts. Nanako tells him that if Uehara accepts the gift then she will forget about him and will only study for the entrance exams. But then she also adds that she will get to the same high school as Uehara. To Nanako and her father’s surprise Uehara accepts the gift and wishes Nanako luck for her exam. 

On his way home, Uehara hears a woman’s voice. He looks at the woman and realizes it’s Yuri. She is drunk and is about to go drinking with two men again. Uehara approaches her and tries to take her away. The two men stop him. Yuri tells them that Uehara is her younger brother. She is about to go with the two men when she suddenly feels like throwing up. Uehara goes to Yuri to comfort her. Upon seeing her situation, the two men leave them alone. Yuri tells Uehara that Takuya is away on a business trip. Uehara takes her home. When Yuri finds out that Nao isn’t home she tries to leave but Uehara stops her.

On Valentine’s Day, Nao arrives at the meeting place early. Uehara wakes up late and sees the letter that Yuri left on the table. He immediately calls Nao and tells her he is on his way. It suddenly rains and Nao doesn’t have an umbrella with her. Uehara sees Yuri sitting on a bench, getting soaked by the rain so he runs to her. Yuri tells him that Takuya might get transferred overseas where he plans to live alone. Uehara gets so worried about Yuri because she has a fever, so he calls Nao to tell her he can’t go to her. 

Daichi’s game gets canceled because of the rain. On his way home, he sees Nao drenched from the rain. He covers her with his umbrella and asks her what the problem is. Nao gets up and tells Daichi that it’s raining because she will meet Uehara. Daichi feels sorry for Nao so he lets go of the umbrella and hugs her.

Our Thoughts:

Yuri is a really nice person, especially to Nao. But we are starting to wonder if she has no other friends. Why is it that when she has a problem, she’d go visit high school students and not her other friends? This is finally Daichi’s chance to take Nao from Uehara. But we doubt Nao will give up easily on Uehara just because he didn’t meet her on Valentine’s. Nao kind of knew that Uehara was with Yuri, but if Yuri tries to explain things then that will fix everything. The only way for Daichi to really have a chance with Nao is if Nao gives up on Uehara.
