Godzilla vs. Kong kind of had to release mid-pandemic, and though the movie was crazy, we don’t know what the future holds for the franchise when it comes to the big screen. What’s interesting is, Legendary’s Monsterverse could be continuing via streaming.
Apple TV has announced that they have greenlit a spinoff series based in the Monsterverse which will have Godzilla and the other “Titans” return. Here’s the series description:
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.
The series will be produced by Legendary Television and will have Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) attached as showrunner. Hawkeye writer Matt Fraction is also attached as an executive producer. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita will executive produce for Toho—the studio that owns the rights to the Godzilla character and has licensed the rights to Legendary.
While the films have been huge spectacles on the big screen, the Monsterverse movies have always been kind of a mixed bag. If anything, the treatment of the monsters is always fine, but the human characters and plotlines are always lackluster. With a TV budget, I don’t know how bombastic they can make this series; but then again, with The Mandalorian pushing boundaries for TV VFX, we can be looking at the same kind of quality with this Godzilla spinoff. That’s just wishful thinking on my part.
No release date has been set for Apple TV’s Monsterverse spinoff series.
