We know that the Top Gun franchise has always been about fighter pilots, but the films do have another thing they’re known for with muscular men playing sports on a beach. Even Top Gun: Maverick tried to top the infamous volleyball scene from the original, and Glen Powell shares a video of everyone flexing before the shoot.

Though it’s been marketed that a huge stunt with the film was shooting the plane scenes IRL, there has also been a lot of talk of the football scene and how they have attempted to top the volleyball scene from the original movie.
In an old press briefing (via Cinema Blend), director Joseph Kosinski explained:
‘We didn’t want to be the cover band version of Top Gun. So our talented screenwriters figured out a way that that scene actually has a story to it. You’ll see it has a very specific point that Maverick is making that scene happen. But the scene itself, I almost feel like Glen’s almost better to talk it out because for the actors this was the Super Bowl of, you know, shirtless scenes. The amount of hard work you had to put in ahead of time, and when the day came, you know just as an aside, I originally conceived it as shirts vs. skins, so when we got to the beach that day I was kind of dividing it up, and very quickly found out that no one (was) looking to keep their shirt on. They were like, ‘No way, I worked too hard.’
Based on what we got in the movie, it seemed like the team’s work pretty much paid off. Not only did they pay great homage to the first Top Gun, but they also managed to show off some incredibly shaped beach bodies. Even Tom Cruise himself looked pretty impressive in the film. That’s dedication.
Top Gun: Maverick is now available in theaters.
