Gimlet Media’s LGBTQ-themed podcast, The Two Princes, is about to get an animated movie adaptation as Spotify and HBO Max are in final talks for the project.
Deadline reports that multiple streaming parties were involved in the discussions, but it looks like Spotify is likely to choose HBO Max as they are now in final negotiations for the Two Princes movie. The podcast’s writer, Kevin Christopher Snipes, will also pen the movie adaptation, which will be animated by Warner Horizon/Warner Bros. Animation and executive produced by Gimlet Pictures’ Chris Giliberti & Justin McGoldrick.
Directed by Mimi O’Donnell, The Two Princes podcast stars Noah Galvin (Booksmart), Ari’el Stachel (The Band’s Visit), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Samira Wiley (Orange Is the New Black). A director for the animated adaptation is yet to be announced, as well as whether or not the podcast’s original cast will be back for their roles.
The Two Princes received critical acclaim for its family-friendly and positive message. After all, it’s rare that you get to hear a fantasy podcast with revolving LGBTQ themes. The podcast’s season one logline reads, “When Prince Rupert sets out to break the mysterious curse that’s destroying his kingdom, he’s ready to face whatever dastardly villain or vile monster stands in his way. What he isn’t prepared for are the bewildering new emotions he feels when he meets the handsome Amir, a rival prince on a quest to save his own realm. Forced to team up, the two princes soon discover that the only thing more difficult than saving their kingdoms is following their hearts.”
Season 2 of The Two Princes raises the stakes in the midst of Rupert and Amir’s marriage. “Princes Rupert and Amir can’t wait to settle down into happily ever after. But on the eve of their wedding, a powerful sorceress named Malkia invades their kingdom,” the second season’s logline reads. “Driven from their castle, the princes set off on a quest to collect an assortment of magical items that will give them the power to defeat Malkia and save their realm.”
The Two Princes is the second Gimlet podcast production to get a live-action adaptation. Amazon Prime produced a 10-episode series for Homecoming, a psychological thriller based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name. It was created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg and starred Julia Roberts.
